Life, love, death, faith – some of the world’s most abstract concepts drive our actions and motivate our behavior, but are shrouded in mystery. Yet certain perfume notes have the power to evoke abstract concepts (much like memories and emotions), despite the absence of a concrete existence, as we learned from a conversation with Amna Al Habtoor of Arcadia in honor of International Fragrance Day.
The Emirati perfumer focuses strongly on nostalgia, using her unisex scents to tell stories about everything from sisterhood and blossoming love to betrayal and deception. Now, having launched her first flagship store in Dar Wasl mall and celebrating the release of her new fragrance ‘Bounded’, she’s encouraging Arcadia loyalists to stay indoors by offering free local and international shipping on all purchases until the end of the month. We can’t help but point out that the term ‘Arcadian’ brings to mind a place that is idyllically innocent, simple, untroubled – perhaps the promise of a better tomorrow?
“I associate the concept of beauty with floral notes because there’s such natural beauty in flowers. Arcadia has a range of fragrances that embody beauty with floral notes: ‘Hassaku High’ as it has notes of jasmine, tuberose, gardenia, and lily of the valley as well as ‘Periwinkle’ with its notes of lavender, rose, and jasmine. ‘Rose Pellets’, as the name would suggest, has strong notes of rose in addition to geranium, jasmine, gardenia, and orange blossom.”
“Musk really makes me feel dreamy – it’s warm, inviting, and comforting, just like being wrapped up cozily in my favorite blanket! ‘Milk Musk’ definitely ties with the concept of dreams – it has notes of vanilla, musk, cashmere wood, sandalwood, and amber.”
“‘Enigma’ reflects faith to me as a prominent heart note is frankincense, which has been commonly used for centuries – and continues to be used today – in places of worship, be they mosques, churches, or temples.”
“Oud is such a big part of Arab culture, particularly Khaleeji households, so fragrances with oud notes definitely remind me of home. Arcadia has a few fragrances with oud notes, but a fragrance in which it is particularly prominent is ‘Splinter’.”
“I think almost anyone would understand why lavender brings about a feeling of peace and tranquility, so in this case, I’d say ‘Periwinkle’ because it has a strong heart note of lavender.”
