New York Fashion Week never ceases to amaze when it comes to bold beauty looks, and Fall/Winter 2020 was no exception. Yes, we spotted the usual suspects that we see season after season – the creative cat-eye, the greasy smoky eye, bold blocks of color – but this season brought something else to the table: a DIY approach to beauty. Whether it’s sticking gems onto your hair, turning to glitter pots for your eyes, or embellishing your nails like your life depends on it, the one thing that was made clear on the New York runways? Arts and crafts is in fashion.
Bored of your usual bold brow? Well, according to Christopher John Rogers, now’s the time to bling them up. Armed with crystal gemstones and brow-boosting products, backstage, the MAC pro team groomed each pair to perfection before carefully applying Swarovski crystals all the way along each arch, from start to finish. Can you say wow brows?
We saw Charlize Theron rocking one at the SAG Awards and now we’re spotting them on the catwalks, thanks to Alice + Olivia. Yes, we’re talking sparkly partings, our new favorite way to jazz up a hairstyle without going for the chop or a color change. Whether you brave the whole rhinestone row or just add a few flecks of sparkle to yours, it’s officially time to make your parting the life and soul of the beauty party.
Bedazzled Beachy Waves
Trust mane magician Justine Marjan to create the embellished beachy waves of dreams for her second hair look for Alice + Olivia. Declaring “I live for a sparkly hair moment”, she transformed tresses with cans of Tresemmé’s ‘Miro Mist’ and individual crystals, which she placed randomly into the lengths of the models’ tousled locks.

In the words of Jackie Kennedy: “Pearls are always appropriate.” We couldn’t agree more, especially when they’re used as a beauty accessory to adorn eyes. Backstage at Fashion Hong Kong, Aveda’s Global Artistic Director Janell Geason placed pearls under the eyes and kept the rest of the makeup minimal to create a romantic, dreamlike look. Pearly peepers, here we come.
If you’re not quite ready to brave the pearly eyed look, then take a page out of the Jonathan Cohen beauty book and wear them in your hair instead. On a few select models, hairdresser Laurent Philippon created cornrows and tight braids, into which he attached pearly balls. The beauty of this look is that you can just add a few pearls to your pony for a touch of je ne sais quoi or go full-on to transform your party ‘do.
Move over nude nails because, next season, it’s all about 3D embellishments, sparkly gems, and the most detailed digits ever. It was all goth chic and rockstar edge at The Blonds, where gold and black designs featuring gold studs reigned supreme. At Susan Alexandra, lead manicurist Holly Falcone used glitter aplenty and individual Swarovski crystals to create the ultimate glittery nails, while the 70s inspired look by manicurist Gina Edwards was created using stick-on gems for an edgy but fun feel at Alice + Olivia. Booked that nail appointment yet?
“For Adeam FW20, I wanted to create a look that is very fresh and clean, but also interesting. We used gold leaf to create an abstract, imperfect eyeliner to complement the gold accents from the collection,” explained Sada Ito, Global Artistry Director for NARS Cosmetics. Perfect for parties and chic dinners alike, this gorgeous golden look has inspired us to swap out our eyeshadow for shimmery, golden gleam.
