Most of us agonize over whether to cut our hair an inch shorter or not, but maybe we should all take a page out of Kim Kardashian’s book and change it up more dramatically. Her signature look is long raven locks with a slight wave and a center part – but the 39-year-old has been known to switch up her style in the blink of an eye, experimenting with length, color, and cut on the regular. Below, we follow her hair evolution from the noughties to now, tracing the changes that made her the icon of constant self-reinvention.

Noughties Curls

Few of us had our best hair moments in the 2000s, and Kardashian was no exception. The style of the day called for big hair and bouncy curls. Back then, her locks were a far cry from the sleek look we’re used to seeing today.

Bangs

The reality TV star started to play around with her hair a bit more after 2010 – and obviously, the first thing you try when you want a new look is a fringe. This long, in-your-eyes chop was definitely an example of style over comfort.

Lighter Locks

Before taking the plunge and bleaching her hair completely, Kardashian opted for honey-blonde highlights. She kept the style pretty classic for the early 2010s – just below shoulder length, waves with a side part.

A Shorter 'Do

Even though Kardashian’s trademark is long hair, she regularly gets the itch for a big chop. In 2015, she tried out shoulder-length hair in her signature tousled style.

Sleek Bob

And in 2017, she went for a modern vibe with a sleek ‘lob’ – long bob – that was bang on trend.

Cornrows

Kardashian’s hair decisions aren’t always without controversy. At the start of last year, she found herself at the center of a conversation about cultural appropriation. She was criticized for referring to them on her Instagram stories as “Bo Derek braids” rather than crediting the African history of this hairstyle.

Experimenting with Color

Kardashian doesn’t limit herself to brown or blonde hair. She must have been inspired by the experimental Harajuku style in Japan last year when she wore pink hair for the trip.

Cher Hair

Kardashian is vocal about her love of singer Cher’s style, and even dressed as her for Halloween once. She shows her Cher love day-to-day by wearing her long hair glossy and poker-straight.

Bleach Blonde

Obviously not afraid to take a risk or two, Kardashian often bleaches her hair platinum blonde. She spent much of 2018 as a blonde, but quite literally stayed true to her roots, with her dark hair visibly growing through.

Now...

In 2019, Kardashian still doesn’t like to keep the same look for very long. However, what we have seen is her rotating a few of her favorite styles. Her go-to for the moment is long hair with baby waves, with a relaxed and beachy – almost wet-look – vibe.
