Want to know a little-known fact? The healthy, shiny, luscious hair that you lust over begins with having healthy kidneys. Most people are unaware that hair loss is generally due to excessive consumption of sugary drinks and foods in your diet, which tend to cool, weaken, and cause expansion in the kidneys.

When you look at the typical foods of the summer months – juices, yogurts, and ice creams for instance – they all contain one key ingredient: sugar. Sugar acidifies the kidneys, which opens the hair pores and facilitates hair loss, as well as leads to the appearance of gray hairs.

So what’s a girl to do, other than avoid sugar? We turned to Isabel Moreno, health nutritionist at the award-winning SHA Wellness Clinic in Spain, for advice on this exact subject. Below, she reveals diet tips and home remedies to help with the universally maligned problem.

1

Increase your consumption of seaweeds.

The Hiziki seaweed, a black and fibrous edible seaweed, is particularly suitable for hair health because it is rich in calcium and vitamins, which help strengthen bones, nails, and hair.

2

Include black sesame in your meals.

Black sesame contains a heady mix of natural ingredients, including phosphorus, protein, magnesium, iron, and calcium, which will help mineralize your body as well as delay the onset of gray hairs.

3

Drink miso soup daily.

Miso provides digestive and cardiovascular benefits, as well as helps to alkalize and replenish minerals in the body.

4

Use an aloe vera hair mask.

Apply a small amount of Aloe Vera gel on your scalp and leave it on for ten minutes, then wash as usual. Aloe Vera acts as a natural conditioning agent, providing moisture to thinning hair.

5

Massage the scalp with black sesame oil.

The act of massaging your scalp will help enhance blood circulation. When the scalp is tight from stress, circulation and hair growth are impeded. Further, the sesame oil will nourish the hair, providing hair with luster and vibrancy, as well as promoting new hair growth.

6

Drink a glass of warm water with a teaspoon of powdered coral daily.

Coral restores the body’s pH levels by neutralizing your internal acidity, which will allow your kidneys to function optimally and for hair follicles to flourish.
