There was one makeup rule on the Spring/Summer 2020 runways at New York Fashion Week: go bold or go home. And, clearly, there were no rules when it came to going color-crazy. There was barely a no-makeup makeup look in sight, with the runways dominated by beauty looks that pushed creative boundaries instead – and were even downright bonkers sometimes.

We literally saw it all, from Pat McGrath’s jaw-dropping creation for Tomo Koizumi that was inspired by David Bowie to the “painterly abstract beauty” created by Erin Parsons for Christian Siriano and some seriously intense neon liner at VFiles. So if you’re about to splurge on makeup, make it colorful, but browse through our edit of the coolest NYFW beauty looks for inspiration first. Wallflowers need not apply.
