If you thought the return of the scrunchie was going to be short-lived – a flash in the pan throwback to a simpler time when the coolest hairdo in the world involved a crimper and a velvet hairband – we’re afraid you were wrong. Very wrong.
The 80s accessory trend is growing – literally – with the arrival of supersized scrunchies that are proving popular with some very stylish Instragrammers, like New York-based fashion influencer Kat Hsu (@iamtheflowerthief) and French stylist Andréa Ottaviani (@andreaetlou).

⚠️🚸 Tinker Bell crossing // Even though this dress is new it has nostalgic value to me as it’s almost the exact same fabric that my auntie sewed things for me as a child – a pillow, a tiny tent/pillow/cape for my stuffed animals, a heart ornament and also a Mulan costume. Pre-school me refused to wear that costume and insisted on putting on my Tinker Bell costume for school instead. Little me also hated when my mom made us speak Chinese in public and packed Taiwanese food that made my backpack smell. Now I’d happily wear that handmade Mulan costume all the darn time (if I still had it and if it fit me), value the privilege of a bilingual upbringing/converse in Chinese whenever possible, and can’t wait to have mom’s food again. 🐉🍚🇹🇼
Both have recently shared pictures on their accounts wearing huge, diaphanous scrunchies in lime green and pink respectively – and looking seriously cool in them, too. You know what that means: where Instagram’s finest lead, the rest of the world follows, so expect to see a mega-scrunchie adorning a ponytail near you in no time.
