The Cannes red carpet may have been the focal point for all things fashion and beauty in the past few weeks, but it’s the work of Holly Silius, a trailblazing makeup artist miles away from the media frenzy, who has caught our attention.
Her gooey, glossy artistry recently made an appearance in a video posted on Instagram by Emily Ratajkowski, looking like the lead in a 1980s prom film. Turns out, the creations of Silius have also graced the faces of Christina Aguilera, Lucy Boynton, Anjelica Huston, and Amber Valletta. Oh, and we use the term ‘creations’ because referring to them as makeup looks feels inadequate – for obvious reasons.
Over the years, Silius – who has a background in special effects makeup – has built a portfolio that extends beyond the realm of the ordinary, never hesitating to experiment with elaborate, futuristic, and even 3D designs. Interestingly, the ability to create flawless bare-faced makeup looks lies within those same hands. Remember when Bella Hadid debuted her natural, dirty blonde locks in Turkey earlier this year? Mert Alas may have nudged her towards that hair transformation, but it’s Silius who was responsible for her freckly beauty look.
Contributing regularly to leading publications worldwide and working primarily in fashion, Silius now boasts a clientele as diverse as her talent – Gap, Stüssy, Saint Laurent, and Nike included. Below, we’ve compiled some of her recent works. Tempted to hit the ‘Follow’ button yet?
