New York Fashion Week wouldn’t be complete without an abundance of bold, bright beauty looks, and the Fall/Winter 2019 edition was no exception. Yes, there were the usual suspects that we see season after season (the creative cat-eye, the barefaced complexion), but FW19 also brought with it an art-inspired movement that we can’t get enough. Whether it’s color strokes inspired by one of the great watercolor painters or a more arts-and-crafts approach to DIY beauty, one thing was made evidently clear by the New York runways: it’s time to unleash your inner artist.
We saw it last season at Lanyu – where Monet-inspired makeup was all the rage – but this season, watercolor beauty is back. And it’s bigger and better than ever before. Impressionist strokes of color adorned eyes at Collina Strada, while makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench created a diffused, watercolor effect by airbrushing MAC’s pigments around eyelids over at Eckhaus Latta – and perfectly complementing the tie-dye collection as a result.
For a more subtle effect, makeup artist Cassandra Garcia used just a touch of washed-out green on the edges of eyes at Tibi for an effortless, lived-in touch. “I was inspired by the perfectly imperfect look of slept-in makeup, and the watercolor green is something cool and different,” she explained. So whether you opt for a bold, multicolored effect or a just a wash of watercolor, this is one trend to try for fall/winter.
Arts and Crafts
Fans of arts and crafts will love this trend, as it’s all about embellishing your beauty look with anything and everything that takes your fancy. We spotted pearls placed in the inner corners of eyes to bring an otherwise barefaced look to life at Adeam, glitter and more glitter at Rodarte, and gemstone freckles using stick-on crystals at Christian Siriano. If you were ever looking for an excuse to dig out those stickers you collected as a kid, this is it.
If there’s one major makeup lesson we’ve learnt from the NYFW runways, it’s that next season is all about color. Hot hues were splashed all over eyes in an array of bright and bold ways, ensuring that the classic fall palette of blacks and browns was a thing of the past. We’re now talking fluoro flicks, rainbow vibes, and luminous lids aplenty.
Whether you opt for a bold block of color (like the one at Carolina Herrera), switch your black kohl for statement liner à la Anna Sui, or go full-on color crazy like the look at Chromat, it’s safe to say this: if you’re going to invest in a new beauty buy, make it multicolored makeup. And the best part? The more abstract, the better.
