Many see the start of a new year as an opportunity for self-improvement, to refresh and restart even in the smallest of ways. And now that January has (thankfully) come to a close, we’re looking back at which celebrities shared that mindset. As it turns out, hair was one of the ways they embraced change, updating their looks and giving us major #hairinspo in the process. Whether they experimented with a new hue, went curly, or chose to chop it all off, stars like Madonna, Naomi Campbell, and Emma Stone sported hair transformations that kept us on our toes all through January.
Long, elegant, and instantly recognizable, Naomi Campbell’s hair is as iconic as her runway walk. That is why we were so surprised to see her take a walk on the short side, sporting bouncy curls at the Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2019 Menswear show. And just as we were debating whether or not the change was permanent, the British supermodel closed the Valentino Spring 2019 Couture show, with her hair styled in a sleek, low bun.
Pop singer Halsey tends to be fearless on all sartorial fronts – and, of course, her hair is no exception. After sporting a brown pixie for a prolonged period of time, she went down a different route with a simple blond bob that complements her tan quite nicely. Sharing her new look via a number of posts on Instagram, she made quite the case for dramatic switch-ups.
Known for changing her look, Madonna is reinvention personified. She was at it again in January, spotted in a look that we haven’t seen since the “Frozen” days circa 1998: jet black hair. Her most recent hairstyle comprised of long, beachy blond waves, but by now, we know never to get used to one Madonna – another iteration is just around the corner.
Rising star Rowan Blanchard has quickly made a name for herself both in the acting world and on the red carpet. Only 17 and utterly fearless, the actress turned her brunette bob into an effortless pixie, giving us one more reason to pay close attention to her.
When she posted a picture of herself with a blunt bob on Instagram, we were convinced that Shay Mitchell had chopped off her long locks in favor of something sleek, but as it turns out, she was pulling a fast one on her followers with a wig. The Canadian actress was photographed with long hair just a day later.
Can we all agree that red is Emma Stone’s color? We came to know and love the actress with brassy-red locks in Superbad, though she has proven herself a true hair chameleon time and time again. Bold auburn, buttery blonde, and pure platinum perfection – there’s nothing Stone won’t try. This time around, she switched things up by going darker, debuting a chocolate-y brown hue at the 30th Producers Guild Awards.
