First, K-Beauty brought us glass skin (a.k.a. dewy, ultra-illuminated skin) and now celebrities are making “glass hair” a thing. The super shiny trend is taking Hollywood by storm, with the likes of Olivia Culpo, Bella Hadid, Ashley Graham, and (of course) the entire Kardashian-Jenner clan getting onboard the glossy bandwagon. You may have noticed that long locks have been swapped for sharp, classic bobs, with short hair becoming the look du jour – but that’s just the start of it. This cool haircut also goes hand in hand with a high-shine finish.
“A trend that’s really big now is glass hair, which is basically super shiny hair,” explains Jess Filewood, top stylist and colorist at Aveda Dubai. “So a sharp, clean cut and very shiny color that can be achieved with a glossing color or lots of shine spray.” Effectively, hair – whether blonde or brunette – that looks like it’s been cut from a piece of glass.
We won’t lie, this isn’t the easiest look to maintain – especially in the Middle East – as heat and humidity is glass hair’s worst nightmare. It requires precision-perfect styling and a whole lot of patience. “The inspiration was 90s swishy glass hair. I wanted to create a really intense shine… For me getting an intense shine was [a] really important part of our look,” revealed Chris Appleton, the man behind Kim K’s glass look, on Instagram. He then went on to reveal what it took to get her short ‘do so shiny, which involved different products at every step of the styling process.
“On wet hair, I applied the Color Wow ‘Dream Coat’ then blowdried the hair using a large round bristle brush. Unlike the sleek styles we’ve done in the past, we wanted the hair to have some volume, so I kicked the ends under for the cute 90s twist. I always finish off with a drop of Color Wow ‘Hair Pop and Lock’ just to finish off the shine and lock in the style.” Armed with his picks, and other shine-inducing products such as those below, anyone can have gorgeous glass hair in no time.
First things first: prepping your hair to perfection to retain that high-shine finish. Before styling your hair (be sure to blow-dry hair with the nozzle pointing downwards as this encourages smoothness and helps tame flyaways), spritz on a gloss-boosting priming spray to help set it. Oh, and a hair iron will come in handy too. There’s no such thing as too straight with this look.
Once hair has been dried and styled, you need to set it and lock in that shine. These sprays are just the ticket – they’ll offer hold while adding a layer of gorgeous, glistening shine to the surface of your locks.
A serum is a must to keep frizz and flyaways at bay and add that sleek, glossy finish. Take a few drops into your hands, rub your palms gently together, and then smooth down the hair from root to tip. Et voilà – hair so reflective you’ll need a high-vis jacket to match.
