Earth, water, fire, air – Chanel’s new ‘Apotheosis Le Mat de Chanel’ makeup collection for Fall/Winter 2018 plays on the colors and textures of the four elements. From the sandy nudes and creamy beiges of earth to a sea of blues and grays for water and air alongside a rich rainbow of dramatic reds for fire, this is where nature meets makeup, and it’s a beautiful thing.
“There are definitely the earthy, deep tones one would expect of an autumn collection, but they’re set against desert-dust colors and deep mauves and strong blues,” explains Lucia Pica, Chanel’s Global Creative Makeup and Color Designer. “They’re like a strong vision spotted across a big landscape from a distance.” The collection creates a harmony between a woman’s internal and external worlds through this varied color palette, bringing together earthy, fall/winter shades with washes of color. It could be a bold red lip, a soft blue eye, or a slick of beige to add structure and strength, but like nature, there are no rules – a vivid red can be seen alongside a bright blue, a deep mauve with a rich teal.
This is a collection where extremes of textures and colors collide. “Starting with such an abstract concept as matte connected me directly to the woman who would wear this finish and to how that would make her think and feel,” explains Pica. This texture extended to Chanel’s packaging itself, which, for the first time in the brand’s history, was matte as well.
As for the woman who would wear this collection? “I imagine her as confident, sophisticated, and elegant – intellectual, but still daring. She’s completely unapologetic, and she’s my favorite kind of woman!” Discover this daring woman and the stunning new collection in the video, above, created by Savoir Flair and Chanel Beauty.
