Not many women do bath time quite like Poppy Delevingne. The self-confessed bathing addict has not only mastered the art of the ultimate sumptuous soak (loud music, no phones, and lots of candles), but also created her own bathing and fragrance line in collaboration with Jo Malone London: ‘Queen of Pop’. Featuring the brand’s first ever bubble bath, the limited-edition collection also includes colorful colognes and candles (of course) to add a dose of foaming, fragrant fun to your tub.
“I apply fragrance every day without fail. I’d actually feel weird leaving my house without it!” explains Delevingne. “Scent means a lot to me; it reminds me of certain people, places, and times. I think fragrance is really important in the world.” It’s therefore hardly surprising that she’s a Jo Malone London Girl – the first, in fact – and that her love of scent inspired her to create the new collection. On that note (no pun intended), discover the dreamy new range and find out Delevingne’s top fragrance tips, tricks, and product picks in Savoir Flair’s exclusive interview with the British beauty.
What’s your earliest scent memory?
It would probably be gardenia because my grandmother always had a dressing table covered in lotions and potions. I wasn’t able to reach them, but I remember the sound of the bottles clinking together and that all-encompassing smell of gardenia. I thought to myself, “I want to smell like a flower garden one day, too!”
How do you apply fragrance?
For me, fragrance is really evocative. I use it to set the scene and my mood. If I’m going into a big business meeting and want to feel strong and powerful, I’ll spray Jo Malone’s ‘Red Roses’ or ‘Peony & Blush Suede’ – both are very feminine, but with a kick. Or if I’m going out at night, I’ll wear ‘Tuberose Angelica’ or ‘Velvet Rose & Oud Cologne Intense’ as they make you feel a little mysterious and naughty. I also like to change it up throughout the seasons. My new obsession is the ‘Jasmine Sambac & Marigold Cologne Intense’, which is taking me beautifully into summer.
What’s your favorite smell in the whole world?
‘Orange Blossom’, my wedding scent. I spritzed it on last week and had butterflies for the rest of the day.
Which fragrance gives you the happiest memories?
‘Amber & Lavender Cologne’ by Jo Malone. It’s the scent that my husband has worn ever since the day I met him when I was 21.
If you could create your own scent, what notes would you include and why?
Amber. I find it very comforting and heart-warming as it reminds me of my husband. I would also include peonies – I just love their scent.
Are there any rules when it comes to fragrance?
I’m very lucky to have a dressing table filled with Jo Malone colognes at home, and I really love experimenting with them. One fragrance combination that I have fallen in love with is ‘Peony & Blush Suede’ with ‘Wood Sage & Sea Salt’ – it’s perfect for summer days at the beach. The more you experiment the better; you could even add a third scent in there. Anything goes! The joy of Jo Malone fragrances is that you can be playful and truly personalize your own scent.
What’s your top fragrance tip?
Don’t smoosh your wrists together when you spray on cologne as it distorts the fragrance. Instead, mist your scent into the air and dance underneath it! That’s the best way to coat your body.
How do you relax and unwind?
I always make time for a luxurious bath. I’ve been known to sit in the bath for hours on end until I’m literally a prune! I love to play music and swim in the bubbles – it’s my ‘me time’. I think that’s sacred and something worth celebrating.
Who, in your opinion, is the ‘Queen of Pop’?
What beauty products can you not live without?
‘C E Ferulic’ by SkinCeuticals, Dr. Barbara Sturm’s ‘Glow Drops’, ‘Tuberose Angelica Cologne Intense Body Crème’ by Jo Malone, and the ‘Repair Hair Mask’ from System Professional. In terms of makeup, I love Bobbi Brown concealer, Charlotte Tilbury’s ‘Filmstar Bronze & Glow’, and the Lancôme ‘Hypnôse Mascara’. I’m also a MAC lipstick addict – ‘Lady Danger’ being my absolute favorite shade.
When do you feel you’re most beautiful?
I would say at the end of a holiday, when you’re a little freckled, your hair is all beachy, your skin’s dewy, and you’ve been smiling for days on end.
Any beauty guilty pleasures?
I love those masks filled with perhaps questionable fruits of the forest… and Hello Kitty sheet masks!
Complete the sentence: To me, beauty is…
Effortless. My icons are people like Jane Birkin and Jean Shrimpton – timeless, playful beauties who don’t do too much. I’m never one for wearing a lot of makeup. Less is more!
