If making your manicure last longer than a couple of days feels like the ultimate beauty feat, you’ve landed in the right place. On a quest to ‘nail’ nail care ourselves, Savoir Flair tapped Judith Caldaza, Marketing Brand Manager of CND, for a chat. What she had to say may just surprise you – especially that bit about cold water.
What are the biggest mistakes women make with their nails?
We tend to forget that we need to take care of our nails between services. Also, keeping our color on for too long or ripping it off are two ways that we can really do damage to our natural nails!
What is the best way to care for nails in the summer?
The best thing that we can do is use the CND ‘Solar Oil’ every day – even twice a day if we can! It keeps nails and cuticles moisturized, conditioned, and protected. Oh, and drink lots of water, of course.
What are the biggest nail-color trends for Spring/Summer 2018?
Spring was fun and fresh, so we saw a lot of pastels for nails that look like candy. As we have moved into summer, colors have become warmer and more vibrant, reminding us of the hot temperatures awaiting us ahead. We will see a variety of oranges, corals, and reds that will blend in beautifully with tanned skin.
Is nail art still trending?
Absolutely! Nail art is here to stay, and there are so many choices. The hottest trend right now is feathery and subtle color gradations, as seen on the nails we did for Pucci. For braver souls, try abstract art that combines lines and geometric shapes – like what we did for Byblos.
What actually works to make the nail polish last longer?
A good quality product, healthy natural nails, and thin layers of color that we let dry before adding the next one.
How often should we get a mani/pedi?
It really depends on the type of natural nails and your activity level. As an average, we should get a manicure once a week, or every two weeks if we are wearing Shellac. For pedicures, the average is every three to four weeks. However, we should not forget home care, which will help us maintain beautiful hands and feet between services. Using an oil and cuticle remover every day can do wonders!
Washing your hands with cold water after applying nail polish makes it dry faster and last longer – true or false?
This is a myth. It will help color feel dry, but that is only on the surface. We need to allow all solvents to properly evaporate from our nail polish, and that can only happen if we apply it in thin layers, which we allow to dry before applying the next one.
