Frizzy hair = beauty disaster. But with soaring temperatures and humidity levels through the roof, just how do you tackle it? Savoir Flair tapped some of the world’s leading hair experts for DIY remedies, summer-friendly hairstyles, and insights into the best frizz-fighting products out there. Here’s what we learned.
According to celebrity hairdresser Mario Charalambous, coconut milk is Mother Nature’s way to fight off frizz. “Coconut milk works as a natural light protein and DIY moisture treatment for frizzy hair,” explains Charalambous. “You can extract coconut milk from the flesh of a coconut or opt for one available in the market. Put two tablespoons of coconut milk in a small pot and heat it until it’s warm, but make sure it doesn’t get too hot and burn! Apply the warm coconut milk to your hair, and cover your head with a shower cap and then a hot towel. Later, wash your hair with shampoo and let your hair dry naturally.”
Skip the Sulfates
Dry hair soaks up humidity like a sponge, and the number one causes of dryness? Sulfates. These harsh chemicals strip hair of moisture, resulting in dry and damaged locks that are super susceptible to summer frizz. Swap out sulfate-packed products for SLS-free shampoos that will gently clean your hair without stripping it of its natural oils to keep your locks feeling smooth and soft.
Hollywood hair stylist Jen Atkin revealed to Savoir Flair that her top tip to beat heat and humidity is to get braiding. From fishtail and milkmaid to schoolgirl and boho, there’s no right or wrong when it comes to braids, and they’re a cool and stylish way to wear your hair in the heat.
Use a Serum
Celebrity hairdresser Trevor Sorbie’s top frizz-fighting tip? “Always use a serum! Sometimes they can be daunting to use, but a small amount suitable for your hair type can really be a miracle.” If you’re worried about your locks getting greasy, make sure you only apply your serum to the mid-lengths and ends – and never to your roots. And remember, a little goes a long way!
When styling or drying your hair, finish with a blast of cold air (cool settings are found on almost all hairdryers). This helps to seal the hair cuticles and prevent frizz disasters later on, whilst also ensuring your blow-dry stays looking perfect for longer. Bonus.
Comb, But Correctly
Brushing and combing your hair helps distribute its natural oils to keep hair hydrated, resulting in smoother locks. However, when done incorrectly, you can brush your way to even more frizz! So ensure you always choose the right type of brush (boar-bristle brushes are the best for smoothing hair). With wet hair, use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle.
Switch to Silk
Banish bed-head and wake up with soft, smooth, frizz-free locks simply by switching to a silk pillowcase. Cotton can dry out hair and cause it to drag and tug across your pillow, whereas silk ensures that hair glides effortlessly and gently across the surface without damaging or drying.
