If you thought purple eye makeup belonged back in the 80s, think again – because purple peepers are making one big, bright comeback. Seen splashed on the lids of countless celebrities and the go-to hue for the world’s top makeup artists, it also happens to be this year’s Pantone color of choice. A coincidence? We think not.
“The color purple is often associated with royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition,” captioned celebrity makeup artist Allan Avendaño on Instagram (alongside a perfectly purple pic of Jenna Dewan). “Purple combines the calm stability of blue and the fierce energy of red. It also represents meanings of wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, dignity, grandeur, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, independence, and magic.”
Purple was even spotted on the eyes of models at the Fall/Winter 2018 shows, including Anna Sui, Tibi, Christian Dior, and Dries Van Noten, as well as being the prominent color of choice for the collections of countless designers – Victoria Beckham, Bottega Veneta, and Adam Selman to name a few.
If you’re starting to think this trend will have you looking like an extra from a Madonna music video, read on to discover why purple works – and actually looks good – on everyone. It’s officially time to let purple reign.
“I think that purple is everywhere at the moment because it’s a color that is universally flattering to a wide range of skin tones and eye colors,” explains Ralph Lteif, International Dior PRO Makeup Artist. “My favorite look is to apply a shimmery purple eyeshadow just to the inner corner of the eyes with nothing else except a light coat of mascara. This look is editorial, but light and very wearable.”
Purple comes in a lot of different shades; it is a versatile color that looks great on any skin tone.
MAC’s Senior Makeup Artist Mariam Khairallah agrees that purple is having a major makeup moment because it works on everyone, telling Savoir Flair, “Purple comes in a lot of different shades; it is a versatile color that looks great on any skin tone. Personally, I describe applying the color purple to the face as ‘the element of surprise.’ It is a color that comes with various personalities… lavender, lilac, violet, mauve, amethyst, and so on…”
So how can you nail the ultimate purple gaze? Here are their top tips to help you on your way to purple perfection.
“To make green or blue eyes really pop, go for a deep purple shadow. For brown eyes, try out a matte lilac shade. The contrast between your eye color and the shade of purple that you choose is what will make your eyes stand out.” – Ralph Lteif
“Wear a deep purple to compliment a radiant look, or create a metallic lavender crease on your eye while matching it with a glossy lip for a 70s inspired look.” – Mariam Khairallah
