Pretty much everyone who’s anyone was at Dior’s LA launch of the new ‘Dior Addict Lacquer Plump’ collection, including Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Winnie Harlow, Jen Atkin, Paris Jackson, and – of course – Savoir Flair.
In between mingling with the stars and discovering the amazing new lip lacquers (more on that, here), we caught up with definitive Dior girl Bella Hadid and Creative & Image Director Peter Philips, picking their brains about all things beauty. From their favorite products to their worst beauty nightmares and even their top TV shows and snacks, here’s what you would’ve heard if you were eavesdropping.
Who’s your ultimate beauty icon, and why?
Bella: I love an Elizabeth Taylor moment. I don’t wear a lot of makeup so, growing up, my inspirations were supermodels like Kate, Cindy, and Naomi because I always saw their ‘no makeup’ images. I always love the late ‘90s hair and makeup looks – I might just cut my hair short for Linda! I have so many inspirations now though, and lots of books that I go through. It depends on my mood for the day.
Peter: Bella Hadid – because she’s sitting next to me!
What’s your go-to makeup look?
Bella: It’s always super taupe-y and gold, and beautiful skin. I love a good contour and brow, but not too much. I think Peter has really perfected that over the years; he’s the number one at doing that ‘no makeup makeup’ look because he always creates just enough coverage, but never so it’s blotchy or too much. That’s what I always strive to do. Sometimes, I’ll add a little bit of liner if I’m feeling frisky! But it’s always a brown-ish lip liner, taupe eyes, and great skin.
Peter: Bella only has one face, but I deal with thousands, so it’s very case by case for me to see what brings out the best in each woman that I do makeup on.
If you could only use one makeup product for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Bella: Mine would probably be the ‘Diorskin Forever Undercover Concealer’ because I always have dark circles under my eyes! The ‘Lip Maximizer’ is also something I always take with me everywhere I go. I’m obsessed with it, so I freak out if I leave the house without it!
Peter: I would be out of the job if I pick just one! But a contour stick is a good one. Or maybe an eyelash curler. Keep it all natural and just curl your lashes!
What’s your favorite thing about LA?
Bella: Mine is definitely the weather. And driving – I drive myself every day, and it’s my favorite thing to do. Just driving down Sunset Boulevard or the Pacific Coast Highway is so calming. You don’t get to do that much in New York!
Peter: Definitely the weather and relaxed mood.
What’s your favorite place in the whole wide world?
Bella: Wherever my mom is.
Any makeup regrets?
Bella: Dark eyeliner inside my eye. That’s something I did a lot in high school, but with nothing else – it was just a lot of dark eyeliner when my mom wasn’t looking. I think it lasted for about six months, and now I’m scarred from that!
Peter: I don’t really have one as the great thing about makeup is that you can just take it off – it’s temporary. Nothing’s permanent!
What’s your favorite color from the new ‘Dior Addict Lacquer Plump’ collection.
Bella: I like ‘868’ and ‘426’.
Peter: I’ve been working a lot with ‘Midnight Star 898’ – it’s especially great on dark-skinned girls. I also love ‘J’adior 868’!
Bella: It’s my favorite color, you can’t pick that one!
What’s so amazing about them?
Peter: They’re very easy to wear and very lightweight, which makes them really nice to apply, too. They’re so long-lasting – almost like a stain, but with the benefits of a gloss!
Bella: I know I keep saying this, but I really mean it. Everyone always asks me why I keep my hair back and don’t wear a lot of makeup, and that’s because I like to be free and do what I want – especially if I’m going to a party or something. So these lacquers are perfect for when you want to put something on and not touch your face. The colors stay very bright and vibrant and, the more you put on, the darker they get or you can keep them as a stain if you prefer something natural. There are so many different colors, so you have a different play on what you want for every night out. And they stay on all night, which is amazing as I hate reapplying and worrying about color smearing on my face!
What’s worse: leaving the house with too much blush or with an obvious foundation line?
Bella: I always love a good pink cheek. I was on an airplane once and saw a girl with really pink cheeks and thought, ‘Does she know that she went outside with cheeks that pink?’ But I realized that I love a good a blush, and it’s such a refreshing look. I mean the over-pink might be too much, but it’s definitely better than an obvious foundation line!
What’s worse: walking around with smudged lipstick or smudged mascara?
Peter: Smudged lipstick. I don’t mind a smudgy mascara!
Bella: I agree. If I had smudged lipstick, I’d go crazy. Smudged mascara can turn into a kind of smoky eye.
Peter: Exactly, because that’s a look – smudged lipstick looks like an accident!
What’s worse: burning off your eyebrows or losing your lashes?
Peter: Wow, that’s radical! I mean, your eyebrows will grow back if you burn them off? Both are traumatizing!
Bella: But both are similar because you can draw on your eyebrows or get lash extensions, so there’s a choice for everyone out there!
What’s worse: walking around with lipstick on your teeth or your falsies falling off?
Bella: I thought you meant false teeth for a minute and I was like, ‘I haven’t gotten there in my life yet!’
Peter: I think lashes falling out because you can just wipe lipstick off.
Bella: Yes, but no one is telling you!
Peter: Oh, I’m the first one to tell someone – I’m a gentleman and that kind of a friend!
Bella: You are! It’s definitely happened before. But if you didn’t have a great friend who told you that you were walking around with lipstick on your teeth, and you’re wearing black lipstick that day, what’s your answer?
Peter: I guess you’d notice lashes coming down and wilting over your eyes! What were you drinking when you wrote these questions? [laughs]

Bella: Dewy skin.

Bella: Five Guys or Shake Shack? Yes, it is! [laughs]
