If tackling blemishes and dark under-eye circles leaves you a little confused, then this one’s for you. Savoir Flair tapped Caroline Young, Directory of Artistry and Education for Laura Mercier, to find out her top tips and tricks on all things concealer. The brand has just launched its amazing new ‘Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Concealer’ that not only perfects, blurs imperfections, and hydrates for 12 whole hours, but is also sweat-, humidity-, and water-resistant. Take that, summer.
What’s better: a liquid or cream concealer?
All are good! It’s more about personal preference coupled with the best formula for the texture you are treating. Creamier formulas are great for flexibility and finer skin textures.
How do I pick the right shade?
For undereye brightening, opt for peach-toned shades in the same depth/level as your skin tone. For skin perfecting, aim to match to your skin tone as closely as possible. Warmer tones will help neutralize any redness. Always test the shade if possible!
How do I apply concealer?
Simply take a doe-foot applicator – what you use to apply lip gloss – and touch it to the area, dabbing and blending with your finger or a ponytail brush for a seamless finish.
Do I need a different concealer for my undereye area and blemishes?
This is a good idea, particularly for problematic skin. The undereye area deserves a soft, blendable, and creaseless formula such as our new ‘Flawless Fusion Ultra Longwear Concealer’, which will flex with the delicate skin area. There’s also the Laura Mercier ‘Secret Camouflage’, a top performer for blemishes. It’s a different texture that adheres expertly to problem areas, and minimal product is required.
Help! How do I stop my concealer from creasing?
Choose a formula with specific technologies that work against creasing. For example, our new concealer has 12 hours of creaseless wear due to its ‘Skin Fusion’ technology and blurring powders that reflect and diffuse light beneath the eyes!
What’s the biggest mistake women make when using concealer?
When they go too dark or too light! Take the time to test and consult with brand artists to learn and discover the best shade and formula for your needs.
How do I make my concealer last longer?
You can set the concealer on your undereye with a brightening powder, such as the ‘Secret Brightening Powder’. Or, for more coverage on the face, use a setting powder like our iconic ‘Translucent Loose Setting Powder’. Using fine powders will add further longwear durability.
How long should I use a concealer for before buying a new one?
You can have one or two in your handbag at the same time! We often need different formulas and shades for different needs of the eye and face area. Products have guidelines on the packaging for each formula, so be mindful of that – otherwise, I’d generally use them for up to a year then replace them.
Are there any other uses for a concealer?
Yes! My favorite is to dab a little on the lips with my finger before applying bold lip colors. This way, you achieve a high-volume lip look that is a little softer and edgier, with a slightly editorial feel. The trend for highlighting is perfectly serviced with this amazing formula and applicator. Choose three shades to match your skin tone, including one that is a shade lighter and one that is a shade darker. You can subtly contour and highlight using just the product and your fingers.
What’s your ultimate concealer tip?
Dab your concealer in small spots on the inner corners, valleys, and tiny outer corners that are often a bit red as opposed to concealing the entire undereye area. This is the best trick for clear, bright eyes and smoothing the appearance on undereye shadows and puffiness. Never drag or wipe concealer under the eye; dab and pat gently until you have a seamless finish.
