Despite the stormy French skies that rained down on Dior’s 2019 Cruise show, it was far from a washout. Instead, it was a powerful moment in modern fashion – where Artistic Director Maria Grazia Chirui perfectly celebrated female strength with her Mexican-rodeo inspired collection – complete with horses, Escaramuzas (female riders), leather waist belts, and ranch-style hats.
It’s therefore hardly surprising that backstage, makeup was used to enhance feminine beauty, rather than to mask it or distort it. Using the brand new Dior ‘Backstage Line’ for the very first time, which Peter Philips, Creative and Image Director of Dior Makeup, explains was “Inspired by makeup artists’ must-haves, available in shades for every skin tone, in buildable textures”, he created a dreamy, dewy, effortless look. “I created the backstage line for today’s women so that they can easily achieve a really natural makeup look with a professional finish”, Philips tells us. “This independent approach conveys the spirit of the Cruise collection, which is dedicated to the proud and beautiful Mexican Escaramuza horsewomen, who inspired Maria Grazia Chiuri. On the catwalk, this meant models in strong, timeless, and chic makeup”.

Skin was all about natural luminosity and breathable beauty, so Philips used the new ‘Dior Backstage Face and Body Foundation’ to create a beautiful base. “As light as air and waterproof, it melts into the skin for an ultra-natural finish and a perfect, radiant complexion”, he explains.
“I also used the light highlighter and contour shades from the ‘Dior Backstage Contour Palette’ to translucently sculpt the face, and then I used the ‘Dior Backstage Glow Face Palette’ in ‘N°001 Universal’, blending strobe white and strobe gold to add subtle shimmer and highlight the cheekbones. To finish, I applied a touch of ‘Diorskin Undercover Concealer’ to hide any imperfections.”
The eye makeup was super soft and natural, achieved with a range of nudes and neutral shades from the amazing new products. “Eyes were lightly made-up thanks to the ‘Dior Backstage Eye Palette’ in ‘Warm ‘Neutrals’, where once again I chose the paler shades ‘primer’, ‘shimmer beige’, and ‘matte nude’ for soft translucent eyelids”, shares Philips.
Instead, he brought focus to the brows using the “Dior Backstage Brow Palettes’. “I brushed the eyebrows carefully, then filled them in to create a ‘controlled wild look’”, says Philips. “To start with, I chose the lighter shade for the whole brow, followed by touches of the darker shade in dark taupe or dark brown.”
Describing the lip look as “very natural”, Philips “first smoothed [the lips] with the ‘Dior Addict Lip Sugar Scrub’, then very subtly heightened, transparently, with a gloss from the ‘Dior Backstage Lip Palette’ in ‘pink’, which adds discreet shine.”
