Successful people around the world have their morning routines down to a fine art. So just how does beauty influencer and businesswoman Mona Kattan start her day? Savoir Flair gets a peek into her morning rituals, from her daily perfume picks to how she keeps on top of her crazy schedule.
I usually wake up around 7 a.m. I really am a morning person. I actually love waking people up and dragging them to go out for breakfast if I’m not working! Even on the weekend, I get up at the same time, and I’ll force Alya, my sister whom I live with, to go out with me. She is not a morning person, so that can be hard!
I’m not going to lie; the first thing I do is check my phone. I’ll start with any urgent messages, and then I’ll go through WhatsApp and Snapchat. I’m definitely a Snapchat girl; I love going through the ‘Discover’ page and, if I have time, I check the news and publishers’ pages on there.
I always drink coffee in the morning and normally always have protein waffles for breakfast, but our chef just moved back to the States, so my routine is a bit random at the moment. I’m trying to find a new healthy breakfast option.
I don’t work out in the mornings, but I should. I do pray every morning, and that’s the one prayer I will never miss. It’s very important to me. I’ll also think of things that I’m grateful for, kind of like a meditation session, which takes me five to ten minutes every morning. I have a list in my notebook, and I try to write down what I’m grateful for: family, good health, safety, etc. I have a list of mantras that I repeat every day too – when I remember to! When I have the time, I try to listen to audiobooks. I love Tony Robbins, Jack Canfield, and Brian Tracy! I leave the news for when I get to the office.
TV usually puts me to sleep, so I leave that for the evenings, but I’ll listen to music every morning. I like iTunes Radio as there are stations for different genres. I listen to jazz and gangster hip-hop like Cardi B if I need to get in the mood to go out. I love singing along with the radio too – I sing a lot! My personal assistant, Sina, is my actual savior, and she really helps me plan my day. I like everything to be very organized, so having templates and processes really does help.
I shower every morning, but if I’m honest, I very rarely wash my own hair. I’m so bad at it! I’ll go to a salon, usually The Dollhouse or The Nail Pavilion in JLT as it’s right by our office. When it comes to body wash, I love ‘Rose Jam’ by Lush. It’s my absolute favorite, and I buy it over and over again despite getting sent a million products.
I don’t wash my face in the morning because, if I wash it too much, I break out. I just use toner – I love the Bioderma micellar water. I’ll then use a face serum, like Olay’s ‘The Regenerist Microsculpting Serum’, and a Shiseido eye cream. I’m kind of boring in that I try loads of new products all the time, but my go-tos pretty much always stay the same. Shiseido and Olay, in general, are my favorite skincare brands.
After I shower, I apply perfumes all over my body and onto my hair, and then let them sink in while I get ready. In the day, I normally wear five or so different fragrances, which I’ll layer up. There are so many that I love, but I normally pick something that’s rosy or with a vanilla scent, maybe some jasmine, and then something that’s a bit of a cocktail. I’ll spray them onto my clothes and my hair so they last longer.
I love the classic Calvin Klein ‘Euphoria’ perfume for day as it’s not as intense as the ‘Liquid Gold’, which I wear at night, and it’s a gorgeous daytime fragrance. I’ve had it since it first launched, and it’s one of those perfumes that I keep buying because it’s so beautiful. Funnily enough, it’s not something I would typically go for because it doesn’t focus on one strong note, but it’s such a nice mix – the complexity is beautiful.
I also love the Gucci ‘Bloom’ perfume. You can spray it all day long, and it’s never too much as it’s so balanced. I sometimes like to mix it together with Gucci’s ‘Intense Oud’, but just a touch as it can be a bit much in the day. Then, at night, you can add more!
I’ll always top up my perfume during the day; it’s the best way to feel refreshed and it will always pick me up if I’m feeling low in energy. I keep my favorite perfumes everywhere – in my car, at my desk, in my bag, in the bathroom, in my living room – and even as decoration around the place!
I’ve always loved perfume. When I first started having money to spend as a teenager, the first thing I’d buy was perfume. At university, when I was on a super-tight budget, I preferred to spend it on perfume rather than go out! I’m just obsessed.
If I’m going to wear makeup in the morning, it will be a mineral powder. The one by MAC is great; it soaks up oil and balances my skin really well. I’ll then use a kit for a super light contour. I love LORAC’s contour kit as the quality is so good and it’s consistent. Finally, I add a touch of blush, a little bit of liner, lipstick, and mascara – I love the Marc Jacobs ‘Velvet Noir’ mascara.
I just had my brows microbladed, so that has saved me a lot of time. All in all, my daytime makeup look is quite simple, and my whole morning skincare and makeup routine only takes me about 20 minutes.
When it comes to getting dressed, I leave it till the morning of to decide. I really should plan ahead the night before, but I never get around to it! I dress according to my mood, so if I’m feeling cozy and comfy, I’ll wear a sweater. If I’m feeling a bit more fun, I’ll wear a funky-colored T-shirt. If I had more time to plan my outfits, I would, but I just don’t!
