What are the biggest mistakes women are making when it comes to their skincare?
Some women choose skincare products based on factors that aren’t related to their own skincare needs. There is no one-size-fits-all product for everyone and, in order to see results, you must listen to your body and choose a regimen that addresses your own skin concerns.
Debunk the biggest skin myth you’ve ever heard.
People with oily skin often believe that they don’t need to moisturize or that doing so will make their skin even oilier. This is a common misconception! In fact, your body produces oils because it’s trying to compensative for the lack of hydration. To control the natural oils that your skin produces, I recommend the Murad ‘Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15’ as it helps absorb oil for up to eight hours while delivering SPF 15 sun protection and keeping skin hydrated.
Here in the UAE, our skin is subjected to extreme conditions. What’s the best way to protect it from the elements and keep wrinkles at bay?
Prevention is key! Always apply an SPF at least 20 minutes before going outside and reapply about 80 minutes after. Murad’s ‘City Skin SPF 50’ is a great option for those looking for maximum protection because, not only does it block UVA/UVB rays, but it also shields the skin from environmental factors like infrared light, blue light, and pollution – all of which cause aging. And, if you’re looking to control oil throughout the day, you can touch up with our on-the-go ‘MattEffect Blotting Perfector’ cushion compact, which instantly mattifies skin for up to eight hours.
What are the top foods that help with healthy, younger-looking skin?
One of the things I recommend is to eat your water! Add more water- and nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables to your diet. It’s not just about drinking water but rather about getting water into the cells and connective tissues to keep them functioning at their full capacity.
Colorful fruits and vegetables can contain a high percentage of water and are full of nutrients. Antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and good fats like salmon, flax seeds, walnuts, and olive oil will help to rebuild cell membranes and reduce irritated skin. Some of my favorite fruits and vegetables include goji berries and pomegranates as they hydrate cells and feed your complexion with antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.
What’s the ultimate skincare routine to help turn back time?
Aging is inevitable, but we can help slow down the process. To have youthful skin, we need to first address cellular hydration. Cells only function at their very best when hydrated and, the older we get, the less hydrated our cells become. To improve cellular hydration, we need to hydrate topically and internally.
We can do this through supplements. My ‘Hydro-Glow Dietary Supplements’, for example, can help encourage collagen production, which is ultimately responsible for the skin’s firmness, elasticity, and hydration. As for topical products, I highly recommend the ‘Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture’, a luxurious yet lightweight cream that provides 24-hour hydration to restore suppleness and visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
When should I start using anti-aging creams?
As prevention is key, you can start as early as your 20s or 30s. Collagen and elastin start to degrade in your 30s, resulting in people seeing their first wrinkles. Cell renewal and turnover continue to decline, leading to a duller complexion and uneven skin tone. Ingredients like retinol help prevent the early signs of aging by minimizing fine lines and smoothing texture.
Speaking of ingredients, what are the magic ones we should be looking out for?
Promoting and protecting health at a cellular level is how we create a youthful appearance. A combination of three classes of ingredients is key: hydrators, anti-inflammatories, and antioxidants. Antioxidants help fight fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and textural irregularity. Examples include pomegranate extract (ellagic acid), vitamin C, and grape-seed extract.
Anti-inflammatories neutralize redness and prevent inflammatory cell damage. Examples include arnica, zinc, aloe vera, and goldenseal. Hydrating ingredients strengthen the skin’s barrier and help build strong cell membranes. Examples include ceramides, sodium PCA, amino acids, and essential fatty acids.
