Aerin Lauder’s stunning new scent collection has just hit stores, and it is beautiful. Solely focusing on the rose, the three colognes are the next best thing to standing in a garden in full bloom. “Roses are my favorite flower. The scent alone relaxes me, energizes me, or inspires me,” Lauder explains. “The new ‘Rose Eau de Colognes’ are a refreshing, effortless way to instantly create or change my mood.”
Addressing everything from the perfume power of roses to the magical memories they hold, she spoke exclusively to Savoir Flair about what inspired her latest launch. Read on to find out more in this exclusive interview.
What is your earliest memory of roses?
My earliest memories are related to scent. I remember walking into my grandmother’s house and always being greeted by a large arrangement of fragrant white flowers – often roses or tuberose. Later, I learned that we both shared a passion for flowers, especially roses.
What is your favorite rose memory?
My wedding was set in the country with tons of fresh flowers. I can still remember the scent of the fresh garden roses during the ceremony – they were all around us.
What is your favorite type of rose?
We’ve used various types throughout the Aerin beauty line – they are some of the most rare and special of these beautiful flowers. A favorite of mine is Bulgarian rose absolute, one of the most opulent and sought-after roses, which is included in ‘Evening Rose’ and ‘Rose de Grasse’. I also love evening primrose – the oil has some amazing skin benefits. We’ve used it within the Rose Body Collection to help soften and moisturize skin.
Why did you decide to create colognes within The Rose Collection?
I wanted to share the different rose notes that I have enjoyed throughout my life in a collection of scents that offer a lighter, luxurious fragrance for every day, every mood, and any reason.
What type of woman did you have in mind for these fragrances?
A woman who is inspired by the desire to travel and loves feminine floral notes. The fragrances express her worldly spirit, her love of life, and the quiet joy of being one’s self.
What inspired you to create three rose colognes versus just one?
There are so many varieties of roses, each with their own scent and unique beauty. I was excited by the possibility of developing a collection of colognes that could capture different facets. Each is tied to a very specific memory, and I experience each memory every time I smell each cologne.
What are your inspirations for each fragrance?
Each fragrance embodies my love of roses in a different way. ‘Bamboo Rose’ is inspired by the more formal gardens you see in Japan. With the moss gardens of Kyoto and the bamboo groves of Arashiyama in mind, we created a very feminine and delicate fragrance with touches of Sicilian bergamot and mandarin blossom.
‘Garden Rose’ is my way of capturing the lively and lush garden roses you see in the English countryside. The combination of white Bulgarian rose, rose bulgare, and rose centifolia brings back great memories of trips to the country. ‘Linen Rose’ brings me to summers past – back to the Eastern shores of Long Island. Long summer days at the beach wearing summery linen dresses alongside salty skin and sandy feet are captured with notes of ylang ylang, white Bulgarian rose, and vetiver.
Do you have a favorite in the collection?
The rose is timeless – it epitomizes femininity and elegance. I’ve always been drawn to the colors and beautiful scent. Roses are a big part of many of my fondest memories, so it is the perfect bloom to thread the Aerin beauty collection together. I love them all, however ‘Linen Rose’ is special as it reminds me of family time and memories of our home at the beach. It’s such a timeless, summery scent that it immediately transports you to the ocean and a time of year that is carefree and relaxed.

What time of year or day would you wear a cologne?
Colognes are great for the summertime or casual days since they’re lighter than a parfum or eau de parfum. I wear these every day, especially on hot days, when wearing a heavier parfum doesn’t feel quite right.
Do you apply a cologne differently than parfum?
Because colognes incorporate a lighter fragrance concentration, you can apply it more liberally than a parfum. We made these in a simple yet elegant 200ml size, knowing how easily they can be worn and with the hope that women would have fun discovering and wearing the collection.
Where is your favorite place in the world to see and smell roses?
Summer is my favorite season of the year. I always know it has arrived when the rose garden at my home on Long Island is in full bloom. I love to see flowers everywhere I go. When traveling, I usually make a point to stop by a local flower market or stroll through botanical gardens.
What inspired the packaging for the colognes?
The packaging takes its cue from my Rose Collection and the fragrances themselves. Since the colognes are light and airy, we wanted the packaging to reflect that sentiment. We picked pale green for ‘Bamboo Rose’, pale pink for ‘Garden Rose’, and a pale yellow for ‘Linen Rose’. We felt these colors were soft, but also reminiscent of each fragrance’s inspiration. The collection also seamlessly fits into The Rose Collection, which features pale pink and our classic Aerin batik pattern.
Does rose influence your other Aerin lines, home, or style?
Flowers have always been a great source of inspiration for me. I often use floral prints in the my fabric collection, and find ways to bring the texture or feeling of florals into the home collection. We also include beautiful embroidered floral motifs on some of our handbags and shoes. At home and around the office, I love to have fresh flowers around. I find they bring life and beauty to any space.

Do you have any tips for using rose as décor in your home?
There are many ways to incorporate rose into home décor, beyond placing freshly cut flowers in a space. Since I was a little girl, I always gravitated to floral prints for my bedroom wallpaper and bed linens. Art is another one of my favorite ways to incorporate florals in a less literal way.
Tell us about your rose garden and salon?
My home on Long Island used to belong to my grandmother. She kept a beautiful white-rose garden that I still maintain and enjoy today. I recently enclosed an outdoor porch space overlooking the garden, so I could enjoy the view in any weather. It’s a beautiful space for entertaining over dinner or just enjoying coffee. I also look forward to planting more roses around a little lunch spot by the pool, where we like to sit as a family.
What is next for the Aerin Rose Collection?
The collection is all about rose essentials for face and body that I think every woman should have. We will continue to work on cult-favorite products that I love and can’t live without, like the ‘Rose Lip Conditioner’.
