Successful people around the world have their morning routines down to a fine art. So just how does makeup artist to the stars and beauty visionary Charlotte Tilbury start her day? Savoir Flair gets a peek into her morning rituals, from her go-to beauty products to how she stays inspired and motivated.
My children are my alarm! They’re up at 7 a.m., and I normally have meetings starting at 8:30 a.m. I love drinking hot water and lemon to cleanse first thing in the morning. I eat avocado on gluten-free toast with lots of pepper and chili because it’s great for your skin and metabolism. I stay fit with lots of dancing in high heels, but recently, I’ve started working out at Bodyism first thing in the morning.
No two days are ever the same for me so, once I’ve had breakfast with my boys, I always make sure to run through my agenda, check my e-mails, and make a few calls to prepare for whatever I have planned. It’s important for me to be organized and visualize exactly what I want from each day.
I think Instagram is such an amazing platform when it comes to engaging with your consumer directly.
I always check Instagram – it has a huge impact on my work every day. It’s like having my own glossy publication and billboard! It gives me instant access to street-style beauty trends that I wouldn’t normally see, such as the unicorn trend, and allows me to understand my consumer needs much better. By reading the comments under posts, I can work out which looks they love and the type of expert tricks they want to learn. I think Instagram is such an amazing platform when it comes to engaging with your consumer directly – customers have named lipstick shades in the past and made key suggestions for the brand!
I also love using Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Snapchat – I see them all as my own magic media platforms! Facebook is my TV channel, YouTube is my tutorial diary, Twitter is like a news board, and Snapchat is like sharing news and ideas with friends. All these apps allow me to share, showcase, and simplify makeup looks that will dominate the beauty world. They also give me an open dialogue to inform, educate, and inspire.
At night, I sleep in my treat-and-transform ‘Magic Night Rescue Cream’ and new ‘Overnight Bronze & Glow Mask’ as they give you a hydrated, flawless tan that develops overnight while you sleep. It’s incredible! The first thing I do in the morning to get that gorgeous, instant glow is to cleanse with my ‘Multi-Miracle Glow Balm’. It’s a purifying cleanser that’s enriched with vitamins and floral extracts to give your complexion a youthful boost and leave skin feeling baby-soft in seconds.
For the best complexion of my life, I multi-mask with my ‘Goddess Skin Clay Mask’ followed by my ‘Instant Magic Facial Dry Sheet Mask’, which I’m now never without. It’s the mask of the future! The dry-textile fabric has been impregnated with tiny vectors of magic actives – including vitamins, floral extracts, peptides, and lipids – that are delivered directly into the third layer of the epidermis using a unique biomimetic delivery system. The lifting, glow-giving effects last for eight whole hours.
I always prep my skin with my miracle-working ‘Charlotte’s Magic Cream’. It contains hyaluronic acid, bionymph peptides, and SPF 15, so it floods my skin with moisture and protects it throughout the day. To cheat eight hours of sleep, I use my life-changing ‘Mini Miracle Eye Wand’. It saves my life on a daily basis! The peptide-packed serum lifts and tightens the skin, while the incredible illuminator reflects the light that gathers in the domes of the undereyes.
For perfect #glowmo skin – no matter how tired I am – I use my original ‘Wonder Glow’ primer, which is the key to glowing skin. It contains a genius ingredient called “fluorescent core” that re-emits natural light through the skin. Everyone calls it “Gisele in a jar”. I also use my new ‘Unisex Healthy Glow Tinted Moisturizer’ – it changes on each person’s skin and enhances its natural glow.
To create beautifully contoured and highlighted skin, I’m obsessed with my new ‘Hollywood Contour’ and ‘Beauty Light’ wands, which will launch soon. I apply the sculpting wand to my cheekbones, temples, forehead, and down the sides of my nose for the ultimate facelift in a flash. And for a magical red-carpet highlight, I apply the ‘Beauty Light Wand’ to the tops of my cheekbones, the tip of my nose, and the inner corners of my eyes for instant illumination and freshness.
To finish my makeup look, I apply my new ‘Hollywood Liquid Lips in Charlotte Darling’ that will also launch soon. It’s a gorgeous pink product that creates fuller, wider-looking lips. It glides on like a gloss, sets like a nourishing matte cream, and feels as light as air with full coverage. It’s like seeing your lips through a whole new, hyper-real filter!
When it comes to my hair, I’m always like Brigitte Bardot with a bit of rock ‘n’ roll. I don’t do much – just wash it, blow-dry my fringe with a round brush, and blow-dry the roots. I’ll usually backcomb it slightly with a Mason & Pearson hairbrush as teasing the hair helps get a little bit of height in the back. I call it “The Bunny”.
My friend and hair genius Jen Atkin created the incredible hair brand Ouai, and I always use the ‘Repair Shampoo’ and ‘Repair Conditioner’ – they’ve really transformed my hair! I also love Sam Mcknight’s new ‘Lazy Girl Dry Shampoo’. I’ve worked with Sam on many shoots and runways over the years. His dry shampoo is ideal for throwing into my bag when I’m on the go, between flights, or backstage for a quick refresh.
You need to have people you aspire to be like.
I head to my office at 8:30 a.m., but I’m often traveling, on a shoot, or getting someone ready for the red carpet. My everyday life is quite diverse! When I create something new, I always think about what people need and look for the blank space in the market. All of my products are years in the making, and I won’t launch anything unless it is the absolute best in the industry. There will never be any “me too” products. I must believe in everything.
I have a mix of creatives, visionaries, and rule-breakers that I look to for inspiration. From Helena Rubenstein, Coco Chanel, and Walt Disney to Steve Jobs, Winston Churchill, and Estée Lauder – the list goes on! You need to have people you aspire to be like, the creatives who push boundaries, the visionaries who make you dream, and the rule-breakers who think differently. I’m constantly learning from what they’ve achieved and how they put their own “ding in the universe”.
