When Dior’s new ‘Pump ’N’ Volume’ mascara landed on my desk, my first thought was, “How on earth has nobody thought of this before?” Just when I thought I’d seen it all – bendable mascaras, dual-ended mascaras, and even vibrating mascaras – Dior stripped it all back and outdid everyone else simply by making its new mascara squeezable. It’s genius and ever so simple – and it seriously works.

On first glance, the new version looks just like the original ‘Diorshow Mascara’, but as soon as you hold it in your hands, you’ll notice and feel that the bottom half features rubbery, squeezable panels that allow you to ‘pump’ your mascara – hence the name. Not only does this mean you can build up volume to your heart’s (and lashes’) desire, but also that your mascara won’t dry up after a month or two.

Inspired by makeup artists backstage at Fashion Week, Dior’s Creative and Image Director for Makeup Peter Philips took their trick of placing mascara in warm water or blasting it with a hairdryer to loosen it up, and put it into practice. The squeezable tube means you can pump and warm up your mascara before you use it, which makes it easier to apply. It also means that you won’t get dry, clumpy goop instead.

Even better news is that the formula, which is slightly thicker than your average mascara, feels super soft and silky, all thanks to its high concentration of waxes and elastic powders – it literally lifts and expands your lashes the second you apply it. One coat is enough to give you thick, high-drama lashes, but the more you pump and squeeze, the more daring the effect. With just two coats, you’ll look like you’re wearing falsies. The dream.

There’s also no risk of clumpy spider lashes either as the brush combines a rigid wand with flexible spikes, ensuring perfect precision whilst lashes are gently separated. The only downside? Once you pump, you just can’t stop. It’s highly addictive, and each satisfying squeeze means you’ll be reaching for your mascara whenever – and wherever – possible.
