Like most women, I love having my nails done. In fact, it’s probably one of my favorite ways to switch off and to treat myself. Nothing beats that fresh-out-the-chair feeling when your nails are all pretty and shiny and you can’t help but keep looking down at your dazzling digits. But, like most women – I hate it when a day later my polish is chipped. And for some reason I’m one of those unlucky ladies who can never make it past day two of a manicure. It’s the beauty bane of my existence.
Yes, I’ve tried gel and shellac, and although that gives me some extra mani mileage, I’m always left with weak, bendy nails, and I’m back at square one trying to find a way to keep my polish looking perfect without compromising the health of my nails. So naturally, when Essie announced the launch of its new ‘Gel Couture’ range, I couldn’t quite believe my ears. A luxury nail polish with high-shine color in a whopping 42 shades, which provides a protective coating and lasts up to two weeks – all with no curing or UV lamps involved? Sign me up. So faster than you can say “fix my fingers”, I was down at my local N.Bar salon to see what all the fuss was about.
A two-step system that involves color and a top coat (there’s no base coat needed here), the first thing I notice about the ‘Gel Couture’ range is the vast amount of shades on offer. There’s every color you could possibly want, from barely-there nudes to bright pinks and the deepest, darkest reds. The bottle is pretty cool too – with its twisted shape inspired by the twirling dresses of the runways, which is home to a swirl stem brush that features a tapered cut, ensuring easy and flawless color application.
The entire application process was over before I knew it, with two coats of color and the seriously shiny top coat applied. Despite the fact that there’s no need to cure the color under a UV lamp, it’s touch-dry much faster than a regular polish. So far, so good.
So to really test this polish’s power, I decided to give it a proper run for its money. I treated myself to a full body scrub that night (nothing like getting some buffing beads going to see how hands hold up), and over the course of a week I did anything and everything to put my hands to good use, including giving my cleaner the week off so I could perform household chores (like washing dishes) myself.
Although I didn’t get to two weeks, I got to six whole days before a chip appeared. This (for me) is a manicure miracle. And the best part is that when you do want to take it off, you just use a regular nail polish remover. None of that soaking your fingers in foil and scraping it off nonsense. So is Essie ‘Gel Couture’ worth the hype? Yes. Definitely. I’ve now found a nail polish that lasts, looks good, and doesn’t leave my nails crying out for some TLC. Gold stars all around.
