Successful people around the world have their morning routines down to a fine art. So just how does Dana Al Khalifa, the Bahraini blogger and founder of The Overdressed, start her day? Savoir Flair gets a peek into her morning rituals, from the beauty products she swears by to her favorite breakfast choices.
My alarm is set for 6.45 a.m., but I can normally hear my daughter over the monitor at 6.15 a.m. having a chat with herself. I try to ignore her and sleep for 30 more minutes, but it’s a lost cause – I’m totally awake by then!
After I’ve fed my daughter and changed her diaper, cleaned her up, and dressed her, we both go downstairs. She sits in her stroller while I make breakfast. I normally heat up some overnight-soaked oats with fresh coconut milk, and sprinkle it with wheat germ, berries, and some honey. I’ll make coffee with a Bialetti cafetière, and then we sit together while I go through my e-mails and she’s on her bouncy chair.
While I’m having breakfast, I go through Instagram, Snapchat, and my e-mails to see what happened overnight in the Americas. I check my e-mails thoroughly, but don’t reply until later in the day, when I’ve put my baby down for a nap as I often need to discuss things with my husband first. He helps me with everything Overdressed.
I’m not a TV person at all. Sometimes, we turn on Spotify and listen to Ella Fitzgerald – I absolutely love her – and Ray Conniff. Other times, it’s classic Disney songs… I can’t control everything now! My daughter loves music; it really calms her down when she’s bored and irritated.
After I get my daughter dressed and fed, I skip breakfast and jump in the shower with her in my dressing room on those mornings when I have to leave the house quickly. I used to take 20-minute showers. They’re now a mere 90 seconds long – two minutes if I’m being luxurious!
I use Santa Maria Novella shower gel and then moisturize with Green Bar’s ‘Lavender & Hazelnut Body Oil’. I spritz some ‘Glowing Moon Tonic’ from Green Bar on my face while I dry up and get dressed and, once my skin is dry, I apply the SkinCeuticals ‘Hydrating B5 Gel’ and finish with Green Bar’s ‘Fig Cream’.
When it comes to makeup, I am absolutely in love with Dior’s bronzer and highlighter duo. I use it on my cheeks and down the bridge of my nose, but I skip the highlighter part during the day. I coat my lashes with a lick of the Dior ‘Blackout Mascara’ and skip my lips because I kiss my baby a lot. But before I head out to work, I do put on some of the Kat Von D ‘Lolita II’ liquid lipstick. It has major staying power.
We’re out of the door at 7.35 a.m. sharp, come rain or shine. I am the queen of wasting time deciding what to wear, but that was before my daughter was born – now I’m more efficient!
