While we are aware that packing our plates with fresh, organic power foods such as green leafy vegetables can help to prevent chronic conditions like diabetes, most of us still rely on expensive lotions and potions for results when it comes to beauty.

“I believe that eating organic, freshly harvested produce is not only essential for your well-being, but also the only long-term approach to achieve glowing, flawless looking skin at any age,” explains Elena Kinane, Managing Director and Founder of Greenheart Organic Farms in Dubai. “What you eat can directly affect your hormone balance, cause acne, and create or reduce inflammation – all directly associated with skin aging.”

Savoir Flair sat down with Kinane and found out her top tips for eating your way toward natural beauty, and which foods not only nourish on the inside, but also on the outside.

Eat Raw

“To achieve a wonderful complexion and radiant glow, banish wrinkles, and retain skin suppleness, it’s vital to load up on as many different types of low-sugar, fresh, organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs as possible. Eat them raw in salads, cut up as crudités with healthy dips (blend soaked nuts and seeds with raw veggies), or create exciting smoothie and juice combinations.”

Go for Green

“Fresh, organic kale is a great beautifying super green, and we grow five different heirloom varieties. It’s one of the best sources of lutein and zeaxanthin, which are nutrients that absorb and neutralize the free radicals created by UV light. It’s also an excellent source of skin-firming vitamins C and A. We also grow a wide variety of different types of herbs such as parsley, coriander, mint, rosemary, and thyme – all of which are packed with antioxidants and incredibly effective when it comes to skin protection and preventing lines and wrinkles.”

Stick to Seasonal

“Although greens should be your staple, all fresh produce has important beautifying nutrients, so I recommend continuously changing and eating what’s in season. Beta-carotene (converted by the body into vitamin A), which is mostly found in orange vegetables such as carrots and pumpkins, is essential for the growth of skin cells. It helps to keep skin soft, smooth, and wrinkle-free. Both are in season in the UAE from early December onward, so try not to buy imports that have been stored and racked up lots of food mileage.”

Better Your Breakfast

“Instead of starting your day with tea and toast, try fresh salads for breakfast. Yes, really… salad for breakfast! Try chopping up spinach, parsley, celery, and Tuscan kale, then add red capsicum, cucumber, avocado, and grated carrots. Dress with a combination of organic virgin olive oil, raw apple-cider vinegar, fresh lemon juice, sea salt, and pepper, and sprinkle with pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Top with chopped up boiled eggs, and you have the ultimate beautifying breakfast. Drink organic herbal tea and/or try this super juice instead of normal tea or coffee: blend freshly squeezed lemon juice, grapefruit juice, and a little orange juice (if you’re not used to drinking sour juices) with fresh turmeric and ginger. For extra power, add açai, maqui, or camu camu powder.”

Greenheart Organic Farms grows more than 120 different varieties of organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs that are available at its farm shop or online for home delivery. Click here for more information.
