Brunettes, rejoice. There’s a hair-color trend taking over our Instagram feeds that is gorgeous, natural, perfect for the fall/winter season, and super flattering on brown locks. Introducing “tiger eye hair”, which (as the name suggests) is inspired by the precious tiger’s eye stone that boasts shades of gold, brown, and caramel. Spotted on celebrities such as Gigi Hadid and Jennifer Lopez, it is the new go-to color of choice – and it’s not hard to see why.
The only difference between this trend and the actual stone is that it isn’t about a stripy hair look – that was (thankfully) left back in the 90s. Instead, it’s all about creating warm, really natural hints of color to accentuate the tones in brunette tresses. To achieve this, colorists use the “balayage” coloring technique (in which color is hand-painted onto hair with a blended effect) to apply the tiger eye hues and make it look like the sun has naturally lifted parts of the hair. It also has the added beauty bonus of being much lower maintenance than highlights because there won’t be that unsightly line when the color grows out. In fact, roots actually make this look even better and more natural.
“With the tiger eye color trend, what you want to achieve is depth of color as this will make your hair look healthier and shinier,” explains Maria Dowling, Dubai’s queen of color and Creative Director of Maria Dowling Salon. “The darker pieces in your hair reflect the light and give shine so the lighter you go, the more products you have to use to achieve this ‘natural’ shine. I always recommend more than one color for my clients as it gives a more natural feel and, with tiger eye color, you want to achieve a mixture of the golds, caramels, reds, and honeys.”
