Turmeric isn’t just the secret behind the perfect curry – it’s also the key to perfect skin. This orange powder is a natural anti-inflammatory and loaded with antioxidants. It has been used for thousands of years as a key tool in Ayurveda, the ancient medical tradition of India, to treat a multitude of conditions such as acne, blackheads, dark spots, eczema, and psoriasis. A natural antiseptic, turmeric can be used to treat new and infected wounds.

The wonder spice also helps reduce signs of aging, fights blemishes, reduces pigmentation, and evens and brightens the complexion. It also helps heal and prevent dry skin, keeping it supple whilst increasing elasticity. Turmeric has long been combined with various herbs and oils and then applied to the skin of brides-to-be, ensuring they look radiant on their big day. It’s also the secret to Thandie Newton’s natural glow – she once called turmeric her “secret weapon”, revealing that she mixes the spice into her products to add a beautifying boost.

The Glow Booster

This face mask mixes turmeric with honey – a natural antiseptic and antibacterial that hydrates and prevents discoloration – to restore a gorgeous glow to lackluster skin.

Ingredients:
– 1 tsp turmeric powder
– 1 tsp honey (Manuka, if possible)
– 1 tbsp yogurt
– 1 big squeeze of lemon juice (optional; this will help lighten dark spots whilst brightening)

Method:
1. Mix all the ingredients together, and apply to cleansed, dry skin.
2. Leave on for 20 minutes before rinsing off.

The Exfoliator

By combining turmeric with creamy, cooling yogurt (which soothes, moisturizes, and gently exfoliates thanks to its lactic acid) and brown sugar (a great scrub that’s gentle on the skin), you can easily and effectively get rid of dead cells to reveal smoother, softer skin.

Ingredients:
– 1 tsp turmeric powder
– 1 tbsp live, natural yogurt
– 2 tbsp brown sugar

Method:
1. Mix the ingredients together to form a paste before applying to cleansed, dry skin.
2. Gently rub the mask into the skin using small, circular motions before leaving on for five minutes.
3. Wash off with warm water.

The Dry-Skin Savior

Give dry skin a jolt of hydration with turmeric, avocado (which is super rich in fatty acids to repair and nourish skin), and coconut milk (which is rich in good fats, vitamins, and minerals to moisturize and smooth skin’s texture).

Ingredients:
– 1 tsp turmeric powder
– ½ avocado, mashed
– 1 tbsp coconut milk

Method:
1. Combine the three ingredients together before applying to cleansed, dry skin.
2. Leave on for up to 30 minutes before washing off.

SF Tip: Only apply a light layer of each mask to avoid the risk of looking yellow! If you do encounter any skin staining, simply mix lemon juice with a little sugar and gently rub into the skin to remove.
