With over 1.7 million followers on Instagram, Fouz Al Fahad (whom you may know better as @TheRealFouz) is one of the region’s biggest beauty influencers, taking the social-media world by storm. This makeup artist’s tutorials are watched by hundreds of thousands of women and, when it comes to anything beauty-related, she sure knows what she’s talking about. So it’s hardly surprising that alongside celebrity makeup artists Chrisspy Makeup and Etienne Ortega, she’ll be hosting a beauty workshop at PopCon Beautyfest, which will take place from October 27th to 29th in Dubai.
Savoir Flair caught up with the Kuwaiti stunner ahead of her appearance at PopCon to discuss what a day in the life of Fouz really entails and how she deals with the pressures of fame.
You are, without a doubt, one of the biggest influencers in the region. How did you get to where you are today?
I think one of the main reasons is because I’m always relatable with whatever I do and wear. I love the idea of mixing and matching mass-market brands with high-end brands, which makes things more realistic – my main concern is always to cater to and care about what the average girl needs and is interested in.
Has it been a difficult journey? Have there been hurdles along the way?
Of course, particularly in the beginning when it was a struggle to make girls appreciate another girl, especially on social media. But I’m very grateful that the majority of my followers are women from a wide age range. I guess when people see that you work hard, they appreciate it.
Are there any downsides to the fame or things that you find hard to deal with?
The only downside to the fame is that privacy doesn’t exist. But sometimes it feels nice to have people know about me and my personal life. The little things, like when I’m feeling down or sick – people know and they care. Social media is a huge thing, it’s never-ending. I love it!
What did ten-year-old Fouz want to become?
Actually the 24-year-old Fouz did what the ten-year-old Fouz wanted to do, which was to teach in university. I majored in finance and, before social media, I was working at a university to pursue that career. With everything going on now in my life, I’m more than happy with the sudden and huge shift that happened.
What would she think if you told her that she would grow up to be one of the most recognized faces in the Middle East?
She wouldn’t believe it. I still don’t sometimes!
My family keeps me sane and humble; they’re the reason behind every decision I make and every direction I work toward.
What’s a typical day like for you? Talk us through it.
A typical day would be waking up and having my coffee first and before anything else. I start my day with a couple of meetings, and catch up with my team for any follow-ups or updates. I then leave to shoot for a few beauty and lifestyle posts, or I attend events. I also travel a lot, normally every two to three days. I honestly work a lot – my days are normally 12 to 14 hours long!
How do you relax and unwind when you have time off from the constant traveling and events?
I unwind by writing articles for the newspaper. I find that it really distracts me from the outside world when I write. Just chilling with friends over pizza is always my way to “go wild”!
How do you stay true to who you are in the midst of all the madness?
My family keeps me sane and humble; they’re the reason behind every decision I make and every direction I work toward. They’re very supportive. Having a stable home to go back to is always a positive thing to have in your life.
Where’s your favorite place in the world to escape to?
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Maybe my businesses will be running steadily and I will probably have my own family, but I’ll definitely be a part of the next big thing!
What piece of advice would you give to anyone wanting to be where you are now?
Believe in yourself to the maximum and make those limitations that society puts on you unrealistic. Always follow your heart.
What’s the mantra you live by?
I’m always thanking God for giving me this opportunity to be as happy as I am today, and allow me to spread confidence and happiness, too.
What are you most excited to do and see at PopCon?
I’m excited to be a part of this enormous and exciting event, but mostly excited about my makeup workshop as I haven’t done one for almost a year and a half! It feels great to come back and start all over again here at Beautyfest, part of PopCon in Dubai!
