When should I start using an anti-aging cream? When will I see results? How should I apply it?
These are just some of the common questions that women frequently ask when it comes to turning back time and improving the appearance of their skin. But what’s surprising is that, according to a recent survey conducted by beauty brand Olay, a whopping 61 percent of women between the ages of 18 and 35 in the Arabian Peninsula “assume anti-aging products are not for them”.
We noticed that many women in the Arabian Peninsula don’t make the link between skin aging and the changes they see on their faces in their late 20s and 30s.
“At Olay, we talk to many women across the world on a daily basis and, through conversations, we noticed that many women in the Arabian Peninsula don’t make the link between skin aging and the changes they see on their faces in their late 20s and 30s,” explains Olay principal scientist Dr. Frauke Neuser.
“Because they are just not making the connection between skin aging and the skin issues they are seeing, they are not open to the anti-aging skincare solutions that are available to them. Indeed, 59 percent told us that they don’t believe they will start to show the signs of aging until they are 35. We believe this is due to not understanding exactly what they are seeing in the mirror, triggered by the fact that 60 percent of women did not know that dark skin spots are indicators of skin aging.”
Upon learning this, Savoir Flair sat down with Dr. Pearl Grimes, dermatologist and member of the Olay Global Derm Alliance, to find out the facts when it comes to retaining a youthful complexion. We got answers to all those anti-aging questions that women around the world regularly ask, so read on to find out more.
What Are the Most Important Parts of a Skincare Routine?
The three most important steps in your skincare regimen are sun protection because we know the sun causes 80 to 90 percent of skin aging, proper cleansing in order for your products to get through and work, and – last but not least – applying a good moisturizer.
What Causes Skin to Age Prematurely?
The sun is the primary cause of skin aging, and bad lifestyle choices can also contribute to premature aging. Current information says that the changes we see in the aging process can be prevented because they are due to sun exposure.
When Should I Start Using Anti-Aging Creams?
Most women begin after the age of 35 or even 40. In fact, 59 percent of women don’t believe they’ll start to show the signs of aging until they are 35, but our last set of research reveals that these signs can start to appear at 20! So we definitely want to start early – before changes start to appear.
When Should I Start Using an Eye Cream?
It doesn’t matter whether it’s an eye cream or a face cream; you have to start preventing early. Choose a product that fights all signs of aging, like the Olay ‘Total Effects Featherweight Moisturizer’. It is a wonderful product for younger women who prefer a lighter, non-sticky moisturizer.
How Soon Will I See the Effects of an Anti-Aging Cream?
For your anti-aging cream to work to its full potential, give it four to six weeks to feel and see an improvement in the hydration and texture of your skin.
Does Stress Contribute to Skin Aging?
Yes, stress can be a contributor to premature aging. Ongoing stress increases oxygen species that can be extremely damaging.
How Should I Apply My Anti-Aging Cream?
Any skincare cream, in general, works better if applied with a few massaging strokes from the middle of the face toward the edges. A gentle massage will increase the penetration of your product.
What's the Difference Between Serum and Moisturizer? Is It Necessary to Use Both?
We should use both. I typically look at serums as being light, absorbent, and easy to spread, and what this product does is trap moisture from the air. In comparison, a moisturizing cream, which is rich and nourishing, tends to contain ingredients that are a little bit heavier – unless you opt for a lightweight product, like the Olay ‘Total Effects Featherweight Moisturizer’.
A serum can be used alone on a hot, humid day or as an excellent base before a full makeup session. A cream can be used alone on a dry day or as a deep treatment at night. However, they are designed to work together.
How Important Is It to Wear Sunscreen Every Day?
Sunscreen should be an essential component of your anti-aging skincare routine all year round because the sun can reach you on cloudy, rainy, or snowy days as well! UV rays account for 80 to 90 percent of skin aging, so every exposure contributes to possible damage at a cellular level.
What Should I Do About Dark Spots?
Well, 60 percent of women don’t know that dark skin spots are indicators of skin aging! Make sure you use sunscreen to minimize them and use a product that decreases the production of pigment.
