Pardon the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reference, but we couldn’t help ourselves. And you’re about to see why.
Nineties-inspired makeup has enjoyed a major comeback in recent years, so it’s hardly surprising that Chanel turned back time for its beauty look at Paris Fashion Week. But get those visuals of grunge-style makeup out of your head, because for SS17 Chanel avoided dark lips and smoky eyes and looked instead to the bright hues associated with that era. Think Kelly Kapowski from Saved by the Bell and you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about.
Backstage at the Grand Palais, Tom Pecheux and his team brightened up faces with hot-pink blusher that was heavily applied along the cheekbones and up to the brows, creating the same effect as that of “draping”, which was the go-to technique for applying blush in the 80s and 90s. It’s safe to say that, for Spring/Summer 2017, the one thing you need to invest in is a blusher – and a seriously bright one at that. Glossy, bright-pink pouts and minimal eye makeup also featured heavily on Lagerfeld’s runway.
And what do you need to complete this beauty look? A side pony, of course – preferably one that’s adorned with colorful hair baubles, and lots of them. Sam McKnight styled locks into low, side ponytails with neon Chanel baubles, which sat perfectly beneath brightly colored baseball caps to complete the Clarissa Explains It All vibe. If there was ever an excuse to dig out your neon gear from the 90s, this is it.
