Forget the vegetarians, pescatarians, and vegans you know because there’s a new group of health-food kids on the block – fruitarians. If the term sounds familiar, it might just be because you’ve watched Notting Hill a few too many times. Never heard of it? You’re in the right place, as Savoir Flair shares what the diet entails, its pros and cons, and a handful of delicious fruit-based snacks. We’ve even included a video clip to get you up to speed on the movie reference!

What Is a Fruitarian?

If you’re a fan of bananas and known to snack on apple slices coated in nut butter, then this is just your thing – as long as you don’t plan on eating anything else for the rest of your life. Fruitarianism is a way of eating that means your diet consists mostly of fruit, sometimes with the addition of nuts and seeds. It’s about consuming foods that fall naturally from plants and don’t harm the harvesting of fresh new produce. Given that it’s not quite so widely adopted as the likes of veganism, it varies slightly on definition, but that’s the gist of it.

Is It Healthy?

Some would say eating a diet so high in sugar, albeit natural sugar, is far from balanced or recommended. Given that sugar has been blacklisted as the one of the main causes of fat gain, we’re personally not too keen on living on a diet that is 75 percent full of it. It is all natural, though, which is a big plus – and the daily dose of vitamins and minerals that a fruitarian receives is pretty high.

Fruity Snack Ideas

Whether you are on board the fruit bandwagon or still not convinced, here’s a healthy compromise: five of the yummiest (and almost 100 percent fruitarian) snacks to keep you feeling full and fruited-up.

Pear Crisps

With pears being the sole ingredient in this moreish recipe, you can’t get a more natural snack. Crispy and guilt-free, these pear chips are perfect for on-the-go munching when you need something sweet and delicious.

Apple Slices with Nut Butter

It’s as simple as the name suggests: slice up your apple and enjoy it with an organic, free-from-nasties nut butter. If you want an added bit of healthy indulgence, sprinkle the nut butter with cacao nibs for a chocolatey crunch.

Honey Yogurt-Covered Grapes

Forget the yogurt-coated raisins and dried fruit that you normally buy at the supermarket – they’re typically full of added sugar and don’t taste nearly as good! This recipe is super simple, involving only honey-flavored Greek yogurt, seedless grapes, and a little bit of freezing.

Grilled Peaches with Vanilla-Bean Mascarpone, Honey, and Granola

Baked fruit often results in the most amazingly sweet and delicious desserts – but grilled peaches top the charts as one of our favourites. Super versatile, they can be enjoyed alone or topped with Greek yogurt and drizzled with honey. The natural sugars from the peaches, which don’t take very long to bake, bubble into a gorgeous sticky bundle.

Frozen Superfood Bananas with Raw Chocolate Sauce

Not only are these frozen superfood bananas the prettiest of our fruitarian-friendly snacks, but they’re also one of the tastiest! They’re a great healthy alternative to sugar-filled ice creams – and a real crowd-pleaser, too.
