Successful people around the world have their morning routines down to a fine art. So just how does Dr. Lamees Hamdan, founder and creator of Shiffa, start her day? Savoir Flair gets a peek into her morning rituals, from the beauty products she swears by to her favorite breakfast choices.
What time I wake up depends on what time I went to bed the night before. I try to get eight hours of sleep, so it’s always eight hours from the time I go to bed, which is usually around 8.30 a.m. I tend not to wake up very early as I have business affairs in the US, specifically Los Angeles, so I’m often up late on calls and e-mails because of the 12-hour difference. I have found that this system suits me, both physically and professionally. It’s important to get enough sleep, and people don’t usually make the time to get a good eight hours!
The first thing I do in the morning is drink a cup of water that has been standing overnight in a pure-copper vessel. I then scan my Blackberry for any urgent e-mails before having a mug of warm water with a squeeze of lemon.
My morning beauty routine begins at this point. I start by giving my skin a quick dry brush to jump-start the lymphatic system. I wash my hair once every two days. Between washes, I use the Ouai ‘Dry Shampoo’ on my scalp to keep it fresh. Before washing my hair, I apply the Shiffa ‘Invigorating Hair Oil’ and massage it into my scalp, leaving it on for at least 30 minutes. This helps to stop hair loss and keeps my scalp healthy. In the shower, I use Ouai’s ‘Clean Shampoo’ (great for oilier scalps) and ‘Repair Conditioner’, the Shiffa ‘Basil, Mint and Black Pepper Body Wash’, and Shiffa ‘Sweetness Body Polish’ to exfoliate. After showering, I use either Shiffa’s ‘Energising Body Oil’ (great for preventing cellulite) or ‘Rose Bliss Balm’ if my skin is dry because of the constant traveling that I do.
For my skincare regime, I use Shiffa’s ‘Aromatic Facial Cleanser’, ‘Organic Muslin Cloth’, ‘Balancing Facial Toner’ (as I have combination skin), and ‘Brightening Ampoule’ (to minimize dark spots on the face) as well as a little moisturizer, eye cream, and EltaMD sunscreen – in that order.
Next, I apply the Huda Beauty ‘Lip Contour in Bombshell’, Sisley ‘Phyto-Lip Twist in 15’, Nars ‘Blush in Liberte’, and that’s it! I use a Mason Pearson wide-tooth comb and elastic bands from H&M to keep my hair in place. I continue with a spritz of the Shiffa ‘Aya Perfume’ on my clothes. I never spray perfume on my skin in the morning, especially not behind my ears, because it can react with the sun and create dark pigmentation.
I then get dressed and choose comfortable shoes – always! I recently went on a shoe binge at Gucci. I’m in love with the brand’s cute lip, heart, and flower embellishments. Once I’m ready, I head downstairs for a light breakfast, which is usually one egg or bone-broth soup with some vegetables. Today, I had an omelet with spinach, olive oil, and za’atar. I sip on herbal tea, such as cinnamon or anise-seed tea, throughout the morning to help keep my body alkaline.
I have the Instagram and Snapchat apps on my phone, and I’ll usually show my followers what I’m having for breakfast, any supplements I’m taking, the best vitamin C, etc. Follow me on Snapchat at @DrLamees!
I don’t leave the house at the exact same time every day because I also have an office at home, but it’s usually around 10 a.m. I don’t like to start meetings – if I can avoid it – before 11 a.m. as I prefer to keep my mornings free to answer e-mails, make calls, and sit with the Shiffa team. I concentrate best in the morning and prefer not to have any outside meetings before getting through my to-do list!
