When supermodels Alessandra Ambrosio and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley stepped out onto the Cannes red carpet last night, they had one very beautiful thing in common – the perfect winged-eyeliner look. However, it’s not easy to recreate a flawless cat eye, and applying eyeliner can be an incredibly intimidating and daunting task. First attempts at the perfect Audrey Hepburn-inspired flick more often than not result in a shaky, smudged line instead of an elegant, winged look.

Thankfully, and just in time for the weekend, Savoir Flair is sharing its six top tips for flawless eyeliner application that will guarantee you a fabulous flick to rival Rosie’s in no time.

1

Mirror, Mirror

Hold a small mirror directly beneath your nose and look down into it as you apply your liner. This simple trick will help you draw the line as close as possible to the lashes, as well as helping to keep the liner thin.

2

Step by Step

Don’t feel that you need to get a perfect line in one fell swoop. Take your time and draw smaller strokes or dots close to the lash line before linking them for a perfectly straight line.

3

Gel It

If you like the look of a thick, dark liner, but you don’t have the steadiest of hands, try using a gel liner with a fine angled brush. A longer brush will allow for more control.

4

Angel Wings

For a perfectly even winged liner, aim the outer tip of the wing towards the end of your eyebrow. Flick the line at the end for a retro effect or keep it straighter and blockier for a more modern look.

5

Clean Up

Use an eye makeup-remover swab to swipe along the edges of your eyeliner and in the inner corner of your eye for a super sharp, clean finish.

6

Must-Dry

Be sure to let your liner dry before you start blinking or moving your eyes around. If you’ve got a smudge or an imperfection left behind by a liquid liner, leave the mark to dry completely before attempting to clean it. Once dry, it will easily flake off when gently rubbed with a dry cotton bud or tissue and you won’t end up smudging the rest of your eye makeup.
