I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with hair extensions. I loved the idea of them, but I hated the thought of wearing them. I’d heard enough horror stories of hair falling out and getting damaged due to dodgy application, and I’d seen the evidence of bad extensions for myself. Seriously ladies, it’s never a good look to have the clips on full show. Especially when the extensions don’t match your hair. And are way too long.
In a nutshell, extensions done wrong are our hair’s worst nightmare, but extensions done right can be one of the best beauty investments you can make. With modern technology and clever techniques, there are now more and more options that ensure they not only look great, but they feel great and are great for hair too. Being a blonde, I’ve always found them even more terrifying — there’s nothing worse than that fake Barbie-looking hair, and to color match it perfectly isn’t an easy task. But then I got to try the new clip-ins created by hair stylist to the stars, Jen Atkin, and award-winning extensions brand Beauty Works, and my life – and hair – changed forever.
When you have good hair, you feel really good.
Created with 100 percent high-quality human hair, they’re the first extensions of their kind to incorporate a ‘root’ as well as low-lights, ensuring they blend seamlessly into the hairline so it’s impossible to tell you have anything there. It takes less than a minute to clip them in, and the results are staggering. My thin, limp, lifeless hair transformed into full, thick, beautiful hair with just one row of clip-ins. I had strangers stop me to ask where I get my hair done. I had people actually ask to touch it. I felt like superwoman.
Not only have these extensions given my hair a boost, they’ve given me a huge boost too. Living in a region where the focus is on long, thick, richly textured hair, I’ve always felt like my locks are lacking. But now, I swish them with pride. They’re the secret of almost every celebrity you can think of and have helped the likes of Gigi Hadid, Khloé Kardashian, and Kendall Jenner change up their looks constantly. “More and more women are playing around with hair extensions and clip-ins”, Atkin told me. “It’s fun! You can mix it up and play with your look. When you have good hair, you feel really good”. She couldn’t have been more right.
Read on to discover Jen Atkin’s top tips on how to care for your hair extensions.
How to Choose Them
Always go for human hair. It means you can use heat (which you can’t with synthetic), and you can paint the roots and blend the color much more easily so they blend in seamlessly with your natural hair.
How to Apply Them
Section off the top part of your hair. Applying them higher up (about an inch above your ear) means you get more volume and thickness throughout your hair. Ensure you back-comb the root where you will be attaching the clip, as this is what they will hold on to. Spray a little hairspray onto the clips or the roots, then clip them in and place your hair over the top.
How to Match Them
Take them to your colorist to match them perfectly. But, thanks to the rooted hair and both lowlights and highlights, it’s much easier to find the perfect match! Cut and color are essential; if the color is off, no matter what you do, they won’t work. Ask your stylist to cut into them so they fit perfectly into your style.
How to Care for Them
Treat them just like you would your normal hair, washing and conditioning them after ever few uses to ensure they don’t become too saturated with product. I usually don’t wash them after every use, so they last longer and stay stronger. If you look after them properly, they’ll last you a lifetime!
