No one would blame you for mistaking last night’s Met Gala red carpet for the premiere of a new Star Wars flick. Over the past few hours, the world has watched as the biggest names in film, fashion, and music walked up the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in their best interpretations of this year’s theme, “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”. Paired with an incredible array of heavy-metal jewelry and hair accessories, the resulting beauty looks fell somewhere between C-3P0 and Princess Leia, with braids and metallic makeup reigning supreme on the red carpet. Add to that a dash of goth in the form of dark lips (the spring season can wait, says Hollywood) and you’ve pretty much summed up this year’s Met Gala beauty look.

Browse through Savoir Flair’s gallery to discover the biggest beauty trends of this year’s event.

Braids

Braids ran the gamut from mohawk ‘dos to more dainty styles, but what they all had in common was the fashion-forward message they carried. Click here for five ways to upgrade your own plaits.

Metallics

At this year’s Met Gala, metallics crept off dazzling red-carpet gowns and found their way into makeup looks. Celebrities experimented with silver hair, golden eyebrows, and more metallic eyeshadow than we’ve ever seen before.

Dark Lips

These goths of the future stepped out onto the red carpet with dark pouts that ran from black to brown to dark berry shades.
