It’s official – pigtails are making a comeback. Sported by numerous celebrities and spotted on the SS16 runways at shows like Chanel, Giles, and Miu Miu, this schoolyard style is now the chicest and coolest way to wear your hair. If images of schoolgirls spring to mind, think again, because pigtails are now being braided, knotted, and twisted to make for the perfect ‘do to take you from the office to an after-work party.

Here are five simple ways to transform your pigtails into the coolest hairstyle ever.

1

Go Chic à La Chanel

At Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2016 show, the pigtail style was transformed from school girl to cool girl thanks to super stylist Sam McKnight. The focus was on the back of the head, keeping the look elegant, chic, and oh-so Chanel. Hair was kept slick and secured with a barrette bow-inspired clip.

Brave the Braids

Anyone who’s anyone has been spotted sporting pigtail braids recently, from Lily Aldridge to Kylie Jenner and Hailey Baldwin to Karlie Kloss. This look really is as simple as creating two plaits for the perfect pigtail look.

Turn Them into Topknots

This cool take on the pigtail style couldn’t be easier. Start by creating a classic pigtail look by parting your hair in the center, dividing your locks into two sections, and securing them into ponytails. Then, twist your hair around itself, secure, et voilà – a double topknot look to rival Khloé Kardashian’s.

Add a Boho Boost

Bella Thorne’s pink-tipped pigtails came to life at Coachella thanks to the simple use of a piece of string. A thin rope wrapped around each plait added an ethnic feel to her look that made for the perfect boho vibe. To try this at home, simply braid your hair (you can also keep it loose if you’d prefer) and wrap a rope of your choice around each pigtail, tying them at the base. Be as haphazard as you can; it’s all about being perfectly imperfect!

Go Halfway

Whether you opt to knot them, twist them, or tie them back in the classic way, just keeping your hair half up, half down will make for a cool, modern, and effortless pigtail style.
