Just a quick look at Jennifer Yepez’s Instagram account and it’s pretty clear that she’s a very big deal in the celebrity hair world. Almost every post is of one of her numerous supermodel clients, including Gigi Hadid, Lily Aldridge, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Adriana Lima.
To uncover the secrets behind these A-listers’ gorgeous hair, Savoir Flair asked Yepez to reveal the products she can’t live without, her top tips, and how to achieve gorgeous beach waves à la Hadid.
You’ve worked with some of the biggest celebrities in the world. Who has had the best hair to work with?
Yes, I am so lucky to get to work with all my amazing girls, and to be honest they all have amazing hair! I’d have to say Salma Hayek and Gigi Hadid have the most amazing hair though.
What’s the biggest mistake you see women making when it comes to their hair?
The biggest mistake women make is not investing in their hair. When it comes to color, cut, or hair extensions, I think it’s better to spend a little more and get exactly what you asked for instead of spending money and time damaging your hair and not getting what you want.
The biggest mistake women make is not investing in their hair.
What’s the craziest request you’ve ever had?
There was a blackout in New York and there was no power. I worked at a salon at the time and my client insisted that I go all the way downtown to finish her hair because she had an event, but there would definitely be no event because the whole city had no power, and there was no way to get around!
Summer is about to hit the UAE, which means extreme heat and humidity. What is your top tip on how to handle summer hair problems?
For dealing with humidity, I’d recommend R+Co ‘Foil Spray’, because it protects the hair from frizz, or using a cream or oil for frizz protection. Try a wavy style so that, if your hair does get a little curly or frizzy, it looks more beachy! I’d also say get a really good blow-dry and use a flat iron by the nape of your neck where hair may get a bit puffy.
Who is your ultimate hair icon and why?
My hair icons are the Masters I feel blessed to have worked with, including Guido Palau, Orlando Pita, Eugene Souleiman, and Luigi Merenu. The only person whom I’d love to work with and haven’t yet is Oribe.
Where’s the strangest place you’ve ever done someone’s hair?
I’d say the strangest place I’ve ever done hair is at the Tom Ford show he did in New York. It was also his store opening and he had celebrities and models walking. I was literally in a closet working on Julianne Moore’s hair. There was no space! It was totally fine though. Orlando Pita was the key stylist for the show; it was a major moment.
What do you predict will be huge in the world of hair in the next year?
I’d say wigs, hairpieces, and extensions. It’s more accepted now and I think women want to play with their looks more than ever. Wearing a wig was such a crazy thing before, and now celebrities like Zendaya and Kylie Jenner are showing girls it’s fun to switch up your look!
What’s one hair product you can’t live without?
The one product I can’t live without is a thickening spray. My favorite is R+Co ‘Dallas Thickening Spray’ and also the Kérastase ‘Résistance Volumifique Volumizing Spray’.
Are there any DIY/at-home remedies you think really work for hair?
I’d say the best thing to do at home is a mask treatment. I use a hair mask when I sleep at night. You can leave it in for as long as you want and your hair will be conditioned. Also, you can do a clear gloss on your hair for shine.
What’s your favorite way to style hair at the moment?
My favorite way to style hair is waves. I can do all sorts of waves and always make them look different. A curling iron can do magic!
To me, great hair is when you feel beautiful and sexy and you feel like you can take over the world.
You’re famous for giving Gigi Hadid her gorgeous surfer-girl waves. What’s your top tip for achieving this look?
Gigi has amazing hair and even if she let it dry naturally she would honestly have the best waves! I’d say the best way to achieve the beachy-wave look is to use an iron. Switch up the direction of each wave and use a wave spray at the end and a little texturizing spray. I love OUAI’s amazing wave spray and texturizing spray.
What’s your top piece of advice for women who are bored of their hair but are scared to change things up?
Get a really good hairpiece. You can get a clip-in bang fringe and have your hairstylist cut it to where it fits your face, and if you have highlights take it to your colorist to match your hair. If you don’t like bangs, try styling your hair differently; try braids one day and a braided pony the next.
Finally, complete the sentence: To me, great hair is…
