Despite the “no-makeup makeup” trend still going strong, so is the pressure on women to look a certain way. In a world of digital enhancements, surgical enhancements, Photoshop, and an obsession with all things pop culture and celebrity related, it’s now almost unheard of for a woman to go anywhere without some form of makeup on, be it a slick of lipstick or a full face of slap. And the ugly truth is that, when women do brave their barefaced beauty and flaunt their natural faces, the backlash from other women is, quite frankly, sickening. Nasty comments, shaming, verbal abuse – seriously ladies, what ever happened to girl power?
After posting a makeup-free pic on Snapchat and experiencing the barefaced backlash for herself, Diala Makki took to Instagram to encourage women around the world to boldly display their natural beauty. She wrote, “Someone told me I look ugly without makeup on Snap today. It kind of made me want to take a pic, with no makeup, no filters, and zero touch up. And guess what… I’m ok with my flaws and imperfections and I nominate my fellow women to do the same!” Makki used the hashtag #IAmWhatIAm to start a real beauty revolution. The result? Regional influencers far and wide washed their faces free of product and posted no-makeup selfies to remind the world, and other women, that they, just like you, don’t wake up with a full face on every morning.
