Have you ever found yourself browsing the beauty counters, staring at the amazing bright lipstick shades on offer, and thinking to yourself, “Oh, if only I could pull that off?” Well the good news is you can, and the even better news is Savoir Flair has some exclusive beauty tips from Rimmel’s Celebrity Makeup Artist, Kirstin Piggott, to help you do that.
What are your top tips for someone who is trying to pick a bright lipstick but is not used to wearing them?
Finding the perfect shade is important and you should select the correct shade for your skin tone. Wear blue-based lip colors if you have more pink undertones in the skin, and wear orange-based lip colors if you have more yellow undertones in your skin. Bright, bold lip colors can be flattering for all ages, but it’s important that you select the right shade and finish to suit your style and skin tone. A matte lip is very cool on fuller lips, but it can appear harsh and aging. A gloss finish on a bright lip looks stunning and is more forgiving, and a sheer satin finish is incredibly flattering and wearable for all ages.
Are any of the shades more suitable for a certain skin tone? Are any of them universally flattering?
If you have more yellow undertones in the skin, you’re warm and should select lip colors with an orange base such as brick reds, burgundy, deep red, maroon, orange, corals, peach nudes, caramels, warm browns, and bronze. If you have more pinky undertones in your skin, you’re cool and should select lip colors with a blue base such as cherry reds, deep plum, wines, pinks, pinky nudes, and pinky browns. Everyone can wear lip colors that have a mix of cool and warm tones such as plums, peach, brownish pinks, poppy red, nudes, and neutral browns.
Every girl should own a minimum of five lipsticks; a gorgeous nude, a summer bright (like a hot or fuchsia pink), a beautiful deep or rich berry, and a couple of great reds.
How many lipsticks do you own?
I have never actually sat down to count my amazing lipstick collection, but I do know that I own hundreds of them!
What lipsticks do you think a girl should own?
I think every girl should own a minimum of five lipsticks; a gorgeous nude, a summer bright (like a hot or fuchsia pink), a beautiful deep or rich berry, and a couple of great reds.
Can I combine bright lips with dramatic eyes? What should I have in mind so it\’s not too much?
A sexy feline flick looks super cute when teamed up with a bright lip or, for the more daring, a gorgeous smoky eye can look stunning with a bright lip, but make sure the rest of your makeup is simple as it can easily appear overdone and retro. To keep your look ultra fresh and modern, wear a stronger shade from your color palette on either the eyes or lips, making that the focal point, and keep the rest of your look simple with softly sculpted cheeks and beautiful flawless skin.
Can I make a red lip seem casual and effortless?
Red lips look super cool and sexy for day or night, dressed up or dressed down, in either a sheer, creamy, glossy, or matte finish. But for an effortless look, keep the rest of your makeup simple with flawless luminous skin and beautifully defined lashes.
What are the most common mistakes women make when it comes to choosing and applying lipstick?
1) Not prepping the lips to ensure they are smooth and hydrated before applying lip color.
2) Not using a lip liner to correctly shape and define the lip before lipstick application.
3) Selecting the wrong shade for your skin tone and the wrong formula for your lip shape and age.
4) Not using a lip brush to apply the lipstick, which gives more control than applying straight from the stick.
5) Not setting the lip color to prevent bleeding.
What do you like most about Rimmel’s new ‘Only 1 Lipstick’ collection?
I love the incredible new lipsticks. They have an amazing formula that glides beautifully onto the lips and an intense color payoff, which is both hydrating and long lasting.
