One of the coolest, quirkiest, and most iconic hairstylists in the world, Sally Hershberger has been transforming the tresses of the A-list elite for decades. Savoir Flair got the chance to speak to her about all things hair in between her styling sessions. Read below for the full interview to find out who she thinks has the best head of hair and what products you should be using to look after your locks in the UAE.

You’ve worked with some of the biggest celebrities in the world, including Kristen Stewart, Uma Thurman, Natalie Portman, and Sarah Jessica Parker. Who has had the best hair to work with?
Meg Ryan – I’ve worked with her for so many years. It’s been great to work with her for so long and in so many different ways. Even today she still comes to the salons and I still go on sets with her!

What inspired you to become a hairstylist?
Growing up in Hollywood, I had this really wild life and always thought I would have a trust fund to fall back on. By the time I was 18, my mom said, “You have got to do something; you have got to go to school.” And then one of my friends said, “You’ve always been good with your hair. Why don’t you do that?” He told me to go to Arthur Johns, who was one of the top three hairstylists in California. So I became an apprentice there and I went to beauty school and got kicked out… Actually, I went to three beauty schools!

How did your career get started?
After I got my beauty license, I started working at Arthur Johns and was doing well. Then I left to go to a salon called Armando’s. It was the top, top salon at the time. I was like the “punk kid”, and when I walked in they said, “Ok, let’s see what you can do.” They made me do a cut on the spot and they loved it and hired me! Each stylist there was incredible in his or her own right. Armando started doing Olivia Newton-John’s hair and then she went on tour for “Let’s Get Physical”. Usually hairdressers don’t go on tour because they are too expensive, but Olivia took me. Suddenly, I was flying out in private jets — it was fun! It was through her that I met the photographer Herb Ritts. He was photographing her for a spread and I did the hair and he loved it. Then he was throwing me into his shoots with Michelle Pfeiffer. I became very known for texture and volume in the ‘80s. It’s almost like matronly hair but more rugged and rough. I was the go-to hairdresser of all the girls (Cindy, Tatiana, the supermodels) because they knew I would make them look sexy.

What then led you to create your own hair care line?
I couldn’t find anything that performed the way I wanted it to when it came to creating texture.

What’s the craziest request you’ve ever had?
To cut someone’s dog’s hair!

What would be your top tip for Savoir Flair readers in the Middle East on how to deal with the effects of heat and humidity on their hair?
It’s all about the right product. It’s very important in this type of climate and with this weather. The need for products that are humidity-resistant is key. ‘Liquid Assets’, my latest product that was released this fall, is humidity- and heat-resistant to help keep the hair cuticle sealed as much as possible, especially in extreme weather. Something that I always tell my clients who have curly hair is that there’s no point fighting it when it’s humid. Instead, embrace the curls and just make sure you’re using products to seal your hair cuticle, like my ‘24K Dry Oil’.

Who do you think has undergone the best hair transformation this year?
Jennifer Lopez
has been looking great recently.

Who is your ultimate hair icon and why?
Sienna Miller –
she is always so stylish and exudes a cool vibe when it comes to her hair. I don’t know why, but I just love it!

Whose locks would you love to make over?
Jennifer Lawrence
. She’s super cool and she has great hair, but I would love to make it edgier.

Where’s the strangest place you’ve ever done someone’s hair?
On the beach, in the desert — I do hair everywhere. Nothing is weird to me anymore!

I think big glam waves, that “big hair” look, is going to be over soon. It’s all about the shorter, edgier hairstyles now.

What’s your favorite hairstyle?
Textured hair. Very textured hair.

What do you predict will be huge in the world of hair next season?
I think big glam waves, that “big hair” look, is going to be over soon. It’s all about the shorter, edgier hairstyles now.

What’s one hair product you couldn’t live without?
I can’t live without mousse!
