When you’re having tanning trouble, there’s only one person to turn to – James Read. The man behind the gorgeous, golden glows of stars like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Lara Stone, and Lady Gaga, he has his own award-winning product line as well as all the insider tips and tricks on how to achieve the perfect color sans streaks or that tell-tale fake tan smell. From what to do if you’ve gone a bit too tan-tastic to how to add natural-looking shape and definition to your body, see below for the ultimate golden rules of tanning from Mr. Read himself.

1

Help! I've gone overboard with the fake tan.

The best way to tackle this is to have a steam in the gym, as this takes the level of your tan down. Using facial wipes is also a good and easy way to lighten your tan.

2

What should I do if my tan starts to go patchy or peels off?

Soak a flannel in water with lemon or lime juice, place in the microwave for 1½ minutes, leave to cool for a few seconds, and then rub all over your skin. This will remove your self tan. Using a wash-off tan can also help even out a patchy tan.

3

How can I mask that pesky, fake-tan smell?

Applying a moisturizer over your skin the day after tanning is a great way to mask the smell. I have worked with my labs to make sure that my tan products have a minimal smell. The sleep-mask tan is perfect to wear to bed with no self-tan smell at all.

4

What should I do beforehand?

Exfoliate 24 hours before tanning, the same with waxing and shaving. Then apply moisturizer to the drier areas of the body just before you tan, including the hands and feet.

5

What tanning product should I pick?

Go for a gradual tan for a light and warm glow, and then bronzing mousse and bronzing spray for a deeper tan.

6

What are the big tanning no-nos?

Washing your hands straight after tanning is a big faux-pas. This makes you have brown arms and white hands — not a good look! Also, over-applying your self-tan is a big no-no. Only apply gradual tans over two days. Do it once, and then exfoliate after three or four days so it fades evenly, then apply again.

7

How can I make my tan last longer?

Use an after-sun product, which will work the same on your color as if it were a real tan. A tan accelerator is great too — mine, of course!

8

Is there a way of applying a fake tan that helps shape and define the body?

Apply your tan on day one, then stand on a towel in front of a mirror on day two and, using a bronzing mist, spray where the light hits the skin – down the sides of the tummy, the front of the legs, the top of the arms, and your décolletage. Leave on for four hours, then wash off. This will add great definition.

9

How should I tackle harder areas, like feet and hands?

When tanning your hands, feet, and ankles, always work the excess product from the arms onto the hands, and the same with the legs onto the feet and ankles.

10

Any secret tanning tips you can share?

Always use a straw when drinking after you’ve tanned your face. This will stop you from getting a white lip area! And always wipe your palms with a wet-wipe to remove any product.

James Read tanning products are available at Sisters Beauty Lounge, The Dubai Mall, and in Bloomingdales-Dubai, The Dubai Mall.
