Sometimes, all we need to do to get through the week is to relax – to stop sweating the small stuff, to relieve our bodies of tension and stress, and to disconnect. Okay, so that might be easier said than done… With our phones being bombarded with e-mails, tweets, snaps, and posts 24/7, how are we meant to just stop? Well here’s your answer: the ‘Aromatherapy Massage’ at the newly opened Spa Intercontinental in the Dubai Marina, the ultimate way to melt your stress and worries away.
Aromatherapy works by systematically stimulating both the mind and the body, as it affects the olfactory system (through our sense of smell), and trans-dermal absorption, as product is applied to the skin, helping you to detox from the inside out. What’s even better is that you get to choose what scent you want to be smothered in, thanks to a choice of seven natural oils from ESPA. From a ‘jet-lag reviver’ to a ‘muscle relaxer’, you’ll find whatever your body (and mind) needs.
After a quick scent test, I opted for the ‘de-stresser’, a soothing body oil formulated with sandalwood, rose, geranium, myrrh, and frankincense to help calm the mind whilst easing tired, stressed bodies towards sleep. It also contains sweet almond oil to deeply nourish and nurture skin, leaving you so silky smooth and soft it’s as if you were wrapped in a cashmere blanket. The treatment rooms are minimal and modern, but inviting and cosy, with a big standing lamp that casts a warm, dim glow over the room as the soothing sounds of meditative music play in the background. Even before your massage begins, you’ll feel relaxed and blissfully cut off from the outside world.
The treatment starts with a cleansing of the feet and a few deep inhalations of your chosen oil, which induce an instant feeling of calm as the ingredients work their massage magic. Throughout the 60 minutes, your entire body is carefully kneaded to rid you of both internal and external stress, and your therapist focuses on the areas that need the most TLC, catering the massage to your specific needs. When the hour was up, I could barely lift my head from my pillow to sip my hibiscus tea, and each and every part of my body felt as though it were floating on a cloud. And soon I was on cloud nine, as that night I fell into such a deep sleep I can’t even remember my head touching the pillow. I awoke revitalized and refreshed, a new spring in my step and my mind clear and focused, ready to tackle the rest of the week. What better way to wake up on a Wednesday?
