What We Know About *That* $59 Million Dollar Wedding
by Grace Gordon 3-minute read December 5, 2023

Welcome to The Scroll, where we keep you up-to-date with all the latest moments currently breaking the internet.

Here Comes the Bride

We’ve heard figures as astronomical as $89 million thrown around (and as "low" as $59 million), but regardless of the actual cost, Madelaine Brockway's wedding at Chateau de Villette has completely transfixed the internet. 'Who is Madelaine Brockway?' you might be asking. We were, too, until our curiosity got the better of us. Brockway has been (unfortunately) dubbed the “car dealership heiress,” and her family splashed out on the viral wedding of the century, sparking a social media frenzy over who she is, where she got her money, and even more mysteriously, who her husband is. According to the enterprising internet sleuths over on Reddit, Brockway’s father is the chairman and CEO of Bill Ussery Motors, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables and Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay in Florida. How a family amasses the kind of wealth where they are able to spend untold millions on a wedding is still a question that hasn't been solved.

As you may suspect, other red flags around this story have emerged. Yes, she flew her entire wedding party on private jets to France, put them up in the swankiest suites imaginable, wined and dined them at the Opera House, Versailles, and the Eiffel Tower, and tied the knot over a three-day wedding weekend. But what’s more alarming? That her new husband faces up to 25 years in prison for allegedly shooting at three police officers? Or that she dressed up as Marie Antoinette for her bachelorette party?

Rita Ora Wore What?

I know Rita Ora is a pop star, but I don’t know a single Rita Ora song. Do you? Does anyone? Is she the OG industry plant? I don’t have answers to these questions, nor do I have any regarding her latest sartorial excursion. At the British Fashion Awards, the red carpets served us some buzz-worthy moments. There was Pamela Anderson, makeup-free, in the ultimate quiet luxury look of cream-colored separates. There was Jasmine Tookes doing her best Yzma from The Emperor’s New Groove impression. There was Sam Smith tottering on towering Vivienenne Westwood platform boots, which was a swift reminder that I also struggle to walk in heels. But, the moment of the night belonged to Rita Ora. According to reports, she wore a downmarket Primark dress (which actually wasn’t too bad, all things considered), paired inexplicably with Stegosaurus spikes going down her spine. I think she mixed up her invite to the British Fashion Awards with her invite to Heidi Klum’s annual Halloween party.

Macaulay Culkin was just awarded a well-deserved star on the Hollywood Boulevard "Walk of Fame," and the speech he gave during its acceptance was unimpeachably perfect. I cried. Real tears. And not just because he will forever be my first crush as Kevin in Home Alone or because when Catherine O'Hara introduced him on stage, he said, "Thank you, mom."

I cried because, in his speech, he thanked his wife, Brenda Song, for being “absolutely everything…my champion…the only person happier today for me than I am...you've given me all my purpose.” His beautiful speech quickly went viral, not just because of how emotional and sweet it was, but for the perfect, hilarious way he ended it. I won’t ruin it for you; just watch it here with a box of tissues handy.

Are We Really Doing This?

Last weekend, Balenciaga staged a show in Los Angeles that was – as one might suspect – very LA-coded. There were casual tracksuits, wraparound sunglasses, Ugg-like boots, and the kind of disheveled layers one might spy on bedraggled brunch-goers at Marco Polo trying to carbo-load after a long night. But the real audible groan of it all was brought on by leather Erewhon bags, sported by runway models and front row attendees alike. I've already been bewitched by TikTok videos of people asking their audience to guess how much a quarter of a blueberry pie is at Erewhon ($40! 40?! What's in the blueberries? Ozempic?), so the last thing we need is a reason to spend even more money on anything bearing the Erewhon name. But, it's a classic Balenciaga gimmick. Remember the Lay's potato chip bags? The trash bags? At least this one will look chic when you're heading out the door.

What's the Name for Not-a-Swiftie?

Taylor Swift has just been named Times' person of the year. Really? In this political climate? Well, I have to hand it to them, this is better than some of Times' past choices. (I'm not kidding, they've previously named Adolf Hitler, Donald Trump, and Elon Musk). Taylor Swift is certainly a person, and it is certainly a year. At the risk of alienating Swifties the world over, I would argue there are a few names more deserving. Like, the entire population of Palestine.
