The One Where We Say Goodbye

On Saturday, October 28, 2023, time seemed to stand still when the devastating news broke: Matthew Perry had passed away in his Los Angeles residence.

Perry, a beloved and talented actor and comedian, was open about his struggles with addiction and had an enormous heart to help others. He turned his home in Malibu into the Perry House, a refuge and "sober living facility for men." He also penned (and starred in) a play entitled The End of Longing – a personal message to the "people like me, and to people who love people like me." He poured his heart into writing the deeply personal, vulnerable memoir Friends, Lovers, and The Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir. And he did all of these things for one single purpose: to help people. Whenever an addict would ask for his help, Perry would always help them, and he would follow through.

Shortly after his memoir was released, Perry discovered five people had read the book and checked themselves into rehab. "They didn't have the guy to tell them it wasn't their fault. I got to be that guy for them," he said. "I would like to be remembered as somebody who lived well, loved well, was a seeker,” Perry said in an interview. “And... that [I wanted] to help people. That’s what I want.”

Perry starred in movies such as The Whole Nine Yards, Fools Rush In, and Don't Look Up, as well as popular TV shows like The West Wing. But he is undoubtedly best remembered for his work as the loveably sarcastic and charmingly funny Chandler Bing on Friends — a character he played while often in the throes of addiction. Somehow, he still managed to bring light and laughter to people across the world who needed it the most.

Perry's influence is indelible; he carved a permanent niche in the hearts of television audiences across the globe. For a generation, he was the voice of irony, humor, and, surprisingly, vulnerability. Thank you for the laughs, Matty. We hope you're resting in peace at 15, Yemen Road, Yemen.

When I die, I know people will talk about FriendsFriendsFriends. And I’m glad of that, happy I’ve done some solid work as an actor, as well as given people multiple chances to make fun of my struggles on the world wide web… but when I die, as far as my so-called accomplishments go, it would be nice if Friends were listed far behind the things I did to try to help other people. I know it won’t happen, but it would be nice.

Climate Change Isn't a Joke, Kim

Kim Kardashian has launched a new Skims line with built-in nipples. Yes, you read that right. Built-in nipples that will remain erect no matter how many icebergs are melting over here in the real world. And even though we wished the campaign we saw was a sketch on SNL, it was not. Like Nero and his fiddle, Kardashian is creating the female version of a codpiece while the rest of us go to hell in a handbasket. Oh, but they're making a one-time donation of 10% of sales to the charity organization 1% For the Planet. Great job, Kim. Way to have your priorities straight.

Like Father, Like Daughter

And speaking of the Kardashians, over on the TikTok account that Kim and her daughter North West share, someone is greeting us Good Morning indeed. North West has been treating fans to videos of herself dancing in full Graduation Bear regalia. The young starlet even took a peek from under the giant headpiece to look at the camera, and okay, we confess, she's adorable. Her cheeky homage to her dad hits us in the good feels and we can't help but wonder if she's just too excited to wait until Halloween?

Meg Ryan Likes the Meg Ryan Fall Aesthetic

We love New York in the fall, and we also love the Meg Ryan fall aesthetic, pumpkin, tote bag, hat, bouquets of sharpened pencils, and all. Ryan's iconic wardrobe from such movies as You've Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, and When Harry Met Sally has been making the rounds on social media, and well, even we will confess we've tried on a Ryan-inspired hat or two. But what does the Queen of Rom-Coms think of it herself? "It is the cutest thing ever," says Ryan. "I saw pictures of girls trying on hats. I don't know why it has anything remotely to do with me, but it is so sweet. It kills me."
