Going beyond a mere runway show, Chanel‘s Creative Director  Virginie Viard shares an immersive vision that has been three years in the making. Her goal? To create a gentle and respectful dialogue, fostering real connections and meaningful encounters.

Drawing inspiration from the former Palais de Justice in Dakar, Senegal, which serves as the venue for both the runway show and a significant part of the accompanying artistic program, Viard expresses her admiration for the breathtaking location. She believes that this magnificent setting not only complements the collection but also serves as a muse for her creative process.

The Chanel – Dakar 2022/23 Métiers d’art collection emerges as a captivating tapestry of plant motifs, geometric shapes, warm colors, sequins, and sparkling pendants, intertwined with the delicate allure of lace. Viard’s designs feature long, fitted coats, tight, flared trousers, wide lapels, platform shoes, oversized sweatshirts adorned with embroidered flowers, multicolored tweeds, and asymmetrical dresses. Embodying the essence of the 70s, the collection is imbued with a soul-funk-disco spirit, symbolizing freedom and an explosion of energy, all through the lens of a jubilant woman.

For Viard, evoking the 70s is not merely a nostalgic nod but an invitation to infuse our lives with the pulse and rhythm that defined that era. Within the collection’s floral motifs, one can find the beloved codes of Chanel, meticulously celebrated. Embroidery work showcases clusters of camellias, intertwined pearls, jeweled buttons, and dazzling sequins, harmoniously coexisting with the coated, pleated lace in black or white. This fusion of classic and contemporary design highlights the mastery of fashion savoir-faire that the maison is renowned for.

The Métiers d’art collection, designed collaboratively between the Chanel Creation studio in Paris and le19M, pays homage to the craftsmanship and expertise that underpin the fashion industry. Since 2002, the annual show has graced various locations worldwide, and for this particular location, Viard aimed to extend the ephemeral beauty and dreams generated by it. By choosing Dakar, a vibrant cultural capital, she celebrates the local art scene and creative disciplines close to her heart, beginning with dance. The École des Sables and choreographer Dimitri Chamblas’ Slow Show welcome guests to the runway, fusing dance and music. Dancers from the École des Sables, alongside singer Obree Daman and his choir, transformed the former Palais de Justice into a captivating artistic experience. The show concluded with a mesmerizing musical performance by DBN Gogo.

The art of cinema is also integral to Viard’s vision, as she collaborated with the Montfermeil and Dakar Kourtrajmé schools to document the collection’s inception in Paris and the journey leading up to the grand event. This emphasis on collaboration and shared experiences has been at the core of Viard’s artistic approach. Meeting, dreaming, and building together with others continue to shape her creative process.
