It's time to truly switch off and find your moment of zen.
Six Senses Zighy Bay. A destination I had heard so much about. With a reputation that preceded it as one of the world's best resorts, this secluded spot was already high on my bucket list. But with my expectations so built up, I wondered if Zighy Bay would meet them?
Embarking on a two-hour journey from Dubai to Oman transported me to a seemingly secret paradise. The drive into the mountains gave me an exhilarating sense of disconnecting from the world. Initially, there was nothing but the promise of a steep mountain excursion. However, as we reached its summit, the remote bay where the Gulf of Oman and the mountains meet, unveiled itself in breathtaking fashion. Adjacent to the local village of Zaghi, this unique spot is where authentic Omani culture is tangible. Soft sands invite casual, shoeless strolls, while bicycles are the preferred means of travel. The resort emanates a village-like atmosphere, where passersby share warm smiles, and the staff's meticulous care ensures a truly relaxing getaway.
The Suite Life
My villa at Zighy Bay was truly a sanctuary. Behind its doors, the place that I would call home for the next two days invited the outdoors in, creating an atmosphere where the natural and manmade blended seamlessly. Spacious and elegant, it felt like an exclusive escape. My personal pool came with a privacy fence that opened onto a quiet stretch of beach. While indoors, the use of natural materials, such as carved stone for the bathtub and repurposed palm trees covering the AC units, were the perfect finishing touches. Every detail sourced from the region to achieve this added to the sense of true connection with the natural surroundings and the breathtaking mountain ranges that surrounded me.
The resort's sustainable commitment extends to the dining experience. Exploring the on-site organic garden gave me a clear sense of what they were doing. It was an area that invited all guests to come and go as they pleased, where we could see the fruits and vegetables being grown that would be on our plate that evening. It was not a behind-the-scenes practice; Zighy Bay's farm-to-table ethos was right in front of me.
During the breakfast buffet, the resort's efforts to implement sustainable practices were not only seen in the local and in-season selection of foods but also in the conscious amount supplied. It was not a buffet meant to create food waste – a practice often overlooked at similar hotel buffets. Here, at Zighy Bay, the food was replenished when needed, and there was no waste in sight. In the evening, I was told about the Chefs' early morning trips to the Dibba fish market to support the local economy, which brings another form of depth to the menu: fresh caught fish sourced directly from the beautiful ocean I was overlooking.
The spa at Zighy Bay is a haven of wellness, relaxation, and healing. Nestled among date palms, it offers a range of treatments in a setting that balances traditional methods with modern comforts. A personal highlight was the Lymphatic Drainage Massage by Dr. Ana Mattos, whose intuitive approach provided noticeable relief and insight into my well-being. Dr. Mattos immediately noticed, just by the way I was speaking, that I was carrying tension in my jaw. She adjusted my treatment to alleviate the months-long pain I had been experiencing. As if by magic, her healing touch worked.
Zighy Bay's dedication to sustainability deeply resonated with me. From ambitious goals like plastic-free living and zero waste to organic farming and energy conservation, its approach to eco-conscious luxury is truly inspiring. The Earth Lab, in particular, is a hub of innovation and education and invites guests like me to engage in sustainability efforts and learn about the resort's broader environmental initiatives. For starters, they recycle all the glass bottles from the resort and allow guests to create something new out of them. From little trays to other crafts, they break the glass down into little shards, and with the use of the ovens in The Earth Lab, you can create a memorable experience and something to take home with you.
