The queen of polka dots is back on the scene.
The glamorous world of fashion is no stranger to the imaginative universe of art and often finds itself intertwined with the latter. In fact, some may regard fashion itself as an art. Fashion designers and brands often dip their toes into the artistic universe to seek inspiration and nurture creative relationships with artists. These creative relationships have historically proven to birth some of the absolutely fabulous and thought-provoking collections, and the latest Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama collection is following suit.
Louis Vuitton has a century-long history of working with artists, going back to Gaston-Louis Vuitton – the grandson of the brand's founder – who commissioned artists to create store windows. Louis Vuitton has also worked with some of the biggest names in art, including Sol LeWitt, Richard Prince, Takashi Murakami, and Jeff Koons, among others.
The Maison has also previously worked with Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama in 2012, where she designed an eccentric collection for the brand. She also hand-painted the timeless Louis Vuitton trunk adorning it with her signature polka dot motifs – that, for her, represent infinity. Now, a decade later, the imaginative worlds of Louis Vuitton and Kusama have collided once again, yielding a fascinating collection adorned with the codes of both the house and the artist.
Continuing the conversation, the Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama collection will see the artist's iconic aesthetic plastered across all of the brand's categories, including both women's and men's bags, shoes, accessories, and even luggage. The collaboration will bring to life a collection of magical objects where Kusama's polka dots and Louis Vuitton's legendary monogram are embossed together.
The Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama collection will be available as two separate drops, with the first one set to be released on January 1, 2023, in China and Japan and on January 6, 2023, to the rest of the world. The second drop will be released on March 31, 2023.
