Dawn breaks over Thailand, spilling golden rays onto its tropical bays and white sand shores. For Elie Saab Spring 2023 Couture, the masterful Lebanese couturier imagines a majestic royal ceremony “in an imperial land where the sun remains forever above the horizon”. Entitled “A Golden Dawn” the collection is resplendent with embellishment – a Saab signature – and fantastical prints and fabrications that will take your breath away.

As the theme suggests, the show kicked off with a sheer, golden guipure lace cape worn over a body-skimming dress, and other opulent capes and dresses followed with gilded details. Saab also injected menswear looks into the proceedings, giving his royal muse a partner, with refined suiting and dandyish touches that perfectly complemented the collections’ many stunning gowns.

Theatrical flourishes abounded. Saab decorated his parade of embellished gowns with touches of maximal appliqués that jutted from bodices, shoulders, and sleeves, while others were sinuously wound with vines. Fabulous capes added even more eye-popping wonder to already magnificent looks, as did a variety of oversized silk bows worn at the throat (a stylistic carryover from his recent ready-to-wear collection). Meanwhile, sarong-like looks, plunging necklines, acres of transparent fabric, and crystal-trimmed cut-outs amped up the sensuality of the collection.

With every mind-blowing Elie Saab couture collection comes high expectations, and this one was exceptionally indulgent, filled with the fantasy and beauty that truly makes this a departure from the ordinary.
