Indie Unleashed: Exploring the Raw and Refined in Celine's Winter '23 Collection

by Grace Gordon 3-minute read December 22, 2023

Celine's Winter 23 "Age of Indieness" collection struts back into the indie scene with a bang, where Hedi Slimane's genius intertwines high fashion with raw indie vibes, rewriting the rulebook of contemporary style.

How do you define indie? It’s a band with pure raw talent that can barely play their instruments. It’s ascending to the heights of music stardom without ever signing to a mainstream label. It’s waking up at night and going to sleep in the morning. It’s the unexpected. It’s high and low codes insouciantly mixed together. It’s its own style of dress.

For those of us who lived through the indie era of the early and mid-aughts, indie hardly has to be defined, but with its huge resurgence in popularity – thanks in no small part to the Celine Winter 23 “Age of Indieness” show staged at the iconic Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles earlier this year – it’s officially back in the mainstream vernacular. Hedi Slimane, who helms creative direction at Celine, is no stranger to “the scene.” Not only was he involved when it was in its heyday, haunting its music clubs, but he also forged close relationships with indie stars and chronicled them back in 2011 for a book of images entitled Anthology of a Decade. In 2017, he was involved with Lizzie Goodman’s excellent documentary of the early 2000s indie scene in New York, Meet Me in the Bathroom

Like most of Celine’s isolated moments, which he extrapolates so effortlessly into something more grandiose, Slimane has a way of defining indie style that not only feels natural but completely right for the moment. For Winter 23, it meant slim cut suits for women juxtaposed against glittering sequined gowns with carved-out necklines – a mix of masculine and feminine that lends itself to the inherent androgyny of “indie.” Couture pieces from the collection were a stand-out, including plush furs embedded with tiny gold charms, slinky minidresses, and dreamy gowns.

In Savoir Flair’s editorial, we capture the high/low mood of the indie movement by contrasting the enticing Celine collection against an urban backdrop. Shot in Paris at Les Orgues de Flandre in the 19th Arrondissement, far from the city’s typically ornate tourist destinations, we imparted a grittier feel to the shoot. It’s couture in a non-couture setting. In other words, very, very indie.
